A church, the story of a tree and an echo preserved in literature give Monoszló a distinctive character. When choosing accommodation, you might ask yourself: are you mainly interested in the town’s historic traces, or would you also like to include destinations in the wider Lake Balaton - North travel region?

Church, tree and literary echo

The Reformed Church may have existed as early as the late 12th or early 13th century; it was originally dedicated to Saint Michael. The possible early date and original dedication offer two different historical perspectives: the early history of the building and its religious affiliation.

A Cornelian cherry tree grows in the garden behind the Reformed Church; it was already there during the Napoleonic Wars. The church and tree are therefore not merely part of the same local setting: the tree links the church’s immediate surroundings to a much later historical period.

A path leads to Visszhang domb, which is associated with the Monoszló echo. Károly Eötvös mentioned this echo in his book “Balatoni utazás.” Here, a specific landscape feature meets a literary trace. The ruins of a windmill that once operated there also stand on Szél-domb. These ruins add evidence of past use to the local landscape.

Landscape in the wider Lake Balaton - North travel region

In the wider region around Monoszló, Hegyestű lies between Zánka and Monoszló. The 337-metre-high mountain offers a striking geological contrast to the town’s historic traces. Its northern side was cut away by a former quarry; the remaining quarry face, almost 50 metres high, reveals the interior of a basalt volcano. As the lava cooled, it formed solidified polygonal vertical columns.

These landscape attractions are also part of the wider Lake Balaton - North travel region. At the viewpoint on the western edge of the Hegyestű quarry area, visitors can identify the surrounding hills with the help of a panoramic information board. A rock garden adds to the geological experience with characteristic rock types from Transdanubia, the western half of Hungary.

The Tapolcai-tavasbarlang offers another natural-history perspective in the wider Lake Balaton - North travel region: boat rides are available there, as well as the guided “Csodálatos karszt” exhibition. The cave system beneath the town has so far been explored over a length of 14.6 kilometres. The cave world thus offers a different focus from the visible quarry face and basalt columns at Hegyestű.

Badacsony is also in the wider Lake Balaton - North travel region. The volcanic mountain offers hiking trails and panoramas for walkers; its distinctive geological formations are known as basalt organ pipes. Grapes grow on the slopes and are used to make Badacsony wine. Hiking, geology and winegrowing thus add further regional themes to Monoszló’s local history.
