Fertőhomok is located on the southern shore of Lake Fertő and in Fertő-Hanság National Park. The village offers several distinct ways to shape your stay: a nature trail and cycling loop, insights into local home life, music and dance in community groups, and brewery tours. You can choose what interests you most rather than trying to fit every theme into a fixed itinerary.

Village Culture and the History of a House

The first room and kitchen of the Fertőhomok tájház feature a home interior from the 1930s. The building was largely rebuilt in 1930 after the earlier thatched-roof house burned down. The exhibition and the rebuilding highlight two different aspects: the interior conveys a way of life, while the building’s history recalls the fire that destroyed its predecessor. The former stable of the tájház serves as an exhibition space, where three to four contemporary artists can show their work each year. Behind the barn is an open-air stage with an audience area for concerts, theatre and dance performances. Community groups also help keep local traditions alive: the singers and dance group, along with the tambura orchestra of the Fertőhomoki Cultural Association, play an important role in bringing the community together. The cultural offering thus ranges from a glimpse of a historic home interior to music and dance sustained by the community.

Brewery, Nature Trail and Church

Szentkői sörház is in the centre of Fertőhomok and offers brewery tours. Visitors can learn about the brewing process and the products. This makes it different from the historical insights at the tájház: the tour focuses on production and products, while the tájház presents a home interior and the building’s history. If you plan to take a brewery tour or attend a particular event, check the dates in advance.

The Békakonty nature trail can be reached by following a gently sloping gravel path behind the municipal office; after about 300 metres, it is on the left. The approximate distance refers to the path leading to the trail on the left. After reading the information boards, the path continues to the Homoki-csatorna. Unlike the nature trail, the “Fertő tótól az Alpokaljáig” cycling loop is a bike route that passes through Fertőhomok. The Roman Catholic Church of Szent Anna-templom stands on a hill above the village, reached by a staircase.

The Landscape in Its Wider Context

The Fertő/Neusiedler See cultural landscape, part of the wider Raab-Wieselburg-Ödenburg travel destination, encompasses Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake, as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and shores. Lake Neusiedl forms the heart of Fertő-Hanság National Park. The Hungarian part of the lake has been protected since 1977. The Fertő-táj cultural landscape was granted UNESCO World Heritage status on 13 December 2001. The protected status applies to the Hungarian part of the lake, while World Heritage status applies to the Fertő-táj cultural landscape.
