The Benedictine monastery in Pannonhalma was founded in 996. This early landmark introduces a region where sacred architecture, an outstanding castle and the cultural landscape of Lake Fertő/Neusiedler See reveal different sides of the destination. For your discoveries in Győr-Moson-Sopron, there are several themes to explore: World Heritage and architecture, the history of Joseph Haydn, and landscapes to experience from a viewpoint or on the water.

Monastery, castle and Haydn’s story

The World Heritage property of the Archabbey of Pannonhalma and its natural surroundings includes the monastery complex, the basilica, educational buildings, the Chapel of Our Lady and the Millennium Chapel. Botanical and herb gardens are also part of the property. The ensemble thus ranges from religious architecture and education to gardens. If you are planning to travel by bus, there is a specific connection: scheduled buses run daily from the bus station in Győr to the main entrance of the Archabbey. Check the timetable before travelling, as transport details may change.

Esterházy Palace in Fertőd is an outstanding work of Hungarian Baroque-Rococo palace architecture. Joseph Haydn’s story offers another cultural and historical perspective: Esterházy Miklós engaged him in 1761 for Eszterháza. Haydn lived and worked there—in parallel with Kismarton—until shortly before his death. Palace architecture and Haydn’s engagement, work and place of residence can therefore be considered as distinct themes in cultural history, without reducing them to the same aspect.

A cultural landscape with different forms of protection

The cultural landscape of Lake Fertő/Neusiedler See includes Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and shoreline areas. Lake Neusiedl forms the core of Fertő-Hanság National Park. The Hungarian part of the lake has been protected since 1977. The Fertő-táj cultural landscape was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status on 13 December 2001. These details highlight both the area’s natural and landscape values and its recognition as a cultural landscape.

Another landscape highlight is the Pannonhalmi Tájvédelmi Körzet, covering 8,272 hectares. Its two main areas are the Pannonhalma Hills and the calcareous sandy steppes of Kisalföld. The hills, in turn, consist of three nearly parallel ridges: Szemere, Csanak and Pannonhalma. The names describe a landscape that cannot be reduced to a single viewpoint or a single landform.

Views and experiences on Lake Neusiedl

The Várhely lookout offers views to the northeast over Sopron, Sopron-Bánfalva, Bécsi-domb, Lake Neusiedl and the Mosoni Plain. If you are interested in different perspectives on the landscape, this named viewpoint offers a different vantage point from a trip on the lake.

An electric boat trip takes you through reed channels and bays on the western side of Lake Neusiedl. Along the way, you can observe aquatic wildlife, reed warblers, great egrets, purple herons and various ducks. The view from Várhely and observations from the boat offer different highlights: one opens up views of the surrounding landscapes, while the other focuses on the reed channels and wildlife on the water.
