Fertőd combines a strong Haydn legacy with a castle as its most important landmark and a range of special experiences. Culture enthusiasts can explore Haydn’s many years of work here, the princely patronage of the arts and the town’s churches; there is also a sensory exhibition, an escape room and a cross-border cycling route. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to your interests.

Haydn, the Castle and the Churches

The Esterházy Castle complex is Fertőd’s most important landmark. The castle is considered an outstanding testament to princely patronage of the arts in Hungary and an exceptional part of the Fertő/Neusiedler See cultural landscape. The castle complex is therefore one of the town’s cultural highlights.

Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) lived at the Eszterháza Muzsikaház from 1769 to 1790, serving Esterházy Miklós for nearly two decades. A memorial room there commemorates him. The connection to Haydn is also reflected in the events calendar: Fertőd regularly hosts concerts, festivals and artistic events associated with his intellectual legacy. Specific dates may vary. If you would like to plan your stay around a concert or festival, check the event dates in advance.

The churches also offer a variety of architectural styles. The Roman Catholic Szent András Church in the Süttör district is Neo-Gothic; the Roman Catholic Szent Kereszt Felmagasztalása Church in the Eszterháza district was built in 1986. The castle chapel in Fertőd received a Europa Nostra Award. Taken together, the town’s cultural profile ranges from Haydn commemorations and castle culture to ecclesiastical architectural history.

Interactive Experiences and Views

Alongside its history, Fertőd offers a range of different experiences. AktiVár is a six-storey interactive exhibition focused on sensory perception. RejtekZóna offers a different focus: its escape room explores the theme of the Soviet military occupation. The “Brummogó” room houses more than 4,000 teddy bears; details of the collection may change over time.

Another option is LátZoom, an observation platform connected to the 22-metre-high, six-storey tower of KalandBirodalom in Fertőd. The experiences differ mainly in their themes: sensory perception at AktiVár, the occupation at RejtekZóna, the teddy bear collection at Brummogó and the views from the tower at LátZoom. This makes it easier to choose if you have a particular interest in mind for your stay.

Cycling Route and Surrounding Landscape

A cycling route connects Fertőd with Austria via the Fertőd–Pamhagen (Pomogy) border crossing. If you plan to use this cross-border route, check the current route conditions before setting out, as they may change. Nearby, Fertő-Hanság National Park is known for its valuable and rare flora and fauna.

In the wider Raab-Wieselburg-Ödenburg destination, the Fertő/Neusiedler See cultural landscape includes Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake, as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and shoreline areas. This allows you to explore Fertőd’s specific castle and Haydn themes alongside the landscape of the wider region as distinct highlights.
