Sopron brings together a range of reasons to visit: the museum district around the Main Square combines several houses into a museum complex, while the Károly Lookout Tower offers views of the city and Lake Neusiedl. There are also exhibitions on the city's history and forests, as well as wine tastings that must be arranged in advance. You can therefore focus your trip on culture, a circular hike or a visit to a wine cellar.

Museums on the Main Square and in Sopron

The museum district on the Main Square was created by bringing the Storno House, General House, Fabricius House and Fire Tower together into a museum complex. The range includes popular exhibitions spanning prehistory to the present, as well as six new exhibitions and attractions. The Storno House, which stands in front of the Fire Tower, took on its present-day Baroque appearance in the 18th century. The Fabricius House stands on foundations dating from Roman times and houses exhibitions of the Sopron Museum. If you plan to make it a fixed part of your itinerary, check the latest visitor information before your visit.

The Lenck Villa permanently hosts the exhibition “A Masterpiece. Bourgeois Life and Craftsmanship in Sopron at the End of the 19th Century.” The Forest Museum has a different focus: its permanent displays include the Béla Hidvégi Hunting Collection, the interactive exhibition “Our National Heritage: The Forest,” and the Alma Mater Memorial Room, devoted to the student traditions of Selmecbánya. The Sopron Museum exhibition in the medieval Old Synagogue consists of the Men’s Synagogue, also called the Torah Hall, the women’s prayer room, and the courtyard well, which was used as a ritual bath (mikveh). Check visitor information if you plan to make the Lenck Villa or Old Synagogue a fixed part of your itinerary.

Views and a circular hike on Károly Hill

The Károly Lookout Tower is part of the Károly Hill Ecotourism Visitor Centre. The centre also includes the Endre Gombocz Forest and Hunting Exhibition Pavilion, the Kőhalmy Hunting Museum and Visitor Centre, the Forest Adventure Park and the Witch’s Fairy-Tale Trail. The tower’s two-storey rooftop terrace offers views of Sopron and Lake Neusiedl. For the circular hike to the lookout tower, starting at the Hotel Lővér bus stop is recommended; local bus routes 1 and 2 serve this stop. Check the current bus timetable before setting out. This lets you include the bus ride to the recommended starting point in your day’s plans without assuming a particular hiking time for the loop.

Wine tasting and Celtic festival

The Steigler Cellar is in the Poncichter district on Balfi Street. Wine tastings and cellar tours are offered there by prior arrangement; contact them directly in advance to arrange your visit. Another occasion to plan around is the traditional Celtic Festival on Sopron Castle Hill, which has been held there since 2005. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the event dates in advance. The two activities require different preparations: the cellar visit needs to be arranged, while the festival requires checking the relevant dates.

A regional perspective within the wider destination of Győr-Moson-Sopron

The wider region of Győr-Moson-Sopron also has its own cultural and natural attractions. The Fertő/Neusiedler See cultural landscape encompasses Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake, as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and shoreline areas. Lake Neusiedl forms the core of Fertő-Hanság National Park; the Hungarian part of the lake has been protected since 1977. Another cultural site in the region is the Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma, founded in 996. The World Heritage property includes the monastic complex, the basilica, educational buildings, the Chapel of Our Lady, the Millennium Chapel, and botanical and herb gardens. These regional sites and landscapes offer a perspective on Győr-Moson-Sopron beyond the museums and attractions in Sopron.
