Város combines well-preserved stone houses with a local history that can also be traced in the surrounding area. Traditional architecture shapes the local character; beyond the settlement, a hill associated with the extraction of “Lemnian Earth” and a volcanic crater linked to Mosychlos lead into different histories. At the entrance to the village, a fossilised tree trunk offers a further geological clue. This makes it possible to understand the village through its architecture, the relocation of its settlement and the island’s geological history.

Stone Houses and the Former Settlement

The well-preserved stone houses of Város are outstanding examples of the island’s traditional architecture. They offer a tangible point of reference if you are interested in building methods and the character of the village as passed down over time. Another point of interest is the trunk of a fossilised tree at the entrance to the village. It bears witness to the island’s geological history; the trunk is located at the entrance to the village, while the history of old Város leads into the surrounding area.

The former settlement of Város lay about 500 metres southwest of the present-day village, on the slope of St’vanos Hill, facing the Gulf of Moudros and near the present-day settlement of Anemoessa. Because of the danger posed by pirates, the inhabitants relocated the settlement to a valley between the hills of Plagia and Langada. This means there are two distinct historical locations: the former hillside site and the settlement’s relocation to the valley. If you are interested in local history, you can consider this change as a chapter in its own right, alongside the surviving stone houses.

Despotis and the Crater Outside the Village

The hill of Despotis rises above Város. From there, the island’s administrator oversaw the extraction of valuable “Lemnian Earth”. The hill thus represents a historical connection between the landscape and the extraction of this material. It lies above the village and should not be confused with the stone houses within the settlement.

There is also a remnant of a volcanic crater just outside Város, identified with the volcano Mosychlos. The story associated with it is explicitly mythological: according to myth, Hephaestus fell into this crater after Zeus threw him from Mount Olympus. The connection between the place and the story gives the crater a different character from the historical accounts of Despotis or the former settlement.

A Route Through Város

The approximately two-hour route “Με κρίνα και με γιασεμιά” begins and ends in Moudros and passes through Város on its way to Kotsinas. Város is therefore on the route described, but is not one of its named endpoints. This distinction is useful if you would like to place the route in the broader context of the island: Moudros is both the start and end point, while Város lies along the way. The stated duration applies to the route; no particular mode of transport is specified.

Limnos in the Broader Travel Picture

On Limnos, nature, archaeology and local produce add to the picture of its individual places. Every spring and autumn, thousands of migratory birds use Lemnos as a stopover on their long journeys between Europe, Asia and Africa. Poliochni is an Early Bronze Age settlement that displays early forms of social and urban organisation. Both offer a different perspective on the island from Város’ architecture and settlement history.

Culinary products are also part of the island’s character: Lemnos is known for the cheeses Kalathaki and Melichloro, made from sheep’s and goat’s milk. Red wine varieties produced on Lemnos include Limnio, also known as Kalambaki, as well as Muscat of Alexandria. Moudros connects the route with another historical subject: the Treaty of Moudros between Turkey and the Allies was signed there in 1918. Alongside Város’ traditional architecture and local history, seasonal nature watching, Early Bronze Age archaeology and history at other places on the island can therefore also help put a trip to Limnos into context.
