Kontias can be explored through three very different cultural features: the village’s oldest church, a gallery of contemporary Balkan art and restored windmills. Together, they offer a tangible impression of Limnos’s architectural history, art and cultural heritage.

Church and Architectural History in Kontias

Agios Ioannis Prodromos is the oldest church in Kontias. The small building has a fortress-like design and is equipped with loopholes and cannons. Its defensive architecture makes the church a striking example among the area’s cultural attractions. It was probably built in the 16th century; its furnishings include old icons. In the 1970s, the building served as a museum. This former use sits alongside its architectural history and surviving details of its furnishings.

Art and Windmills

The gallery of contemporary Balkan art in Kontias offers a different perspective. It displays works by artists from Lemnos, Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia and Turkey. The artists’ origins take the view beyond the village. In Kontias, religious architectural history and contemporary art therefore stand side by side as distinct cultural themes.

The restored windmills of Kontias are also part of Limnos’s architectural and cultural heritage. They add another aspect of the island’s history to the picture of the village’s architectural forms. The church, gallery and windmills can therefore be seen as different ways of exploring the area: through a historic church, contemporary art and restored architecture.

The Wider Limnos: Landscape and History

Those looking at Limnos as a whole will also find striking contrasts in its landscapes. Near Katalakkos lies the area of sand dunes known as Ammothines: it covers 70 stremmata and is inland, away from the coast. Falakra, by contrast, is known for volcanic formations attributed to the meeting of lava and sea. Every spring and autumn, migratory birds use Limnos as a stopover on their long journeys between Europe, Asia and Africa; there are thousands of them. Dunes, coastal formations and seasonal bird migration represent different natural features of the wider destination, not characteristics of Kontias.

The history of Limnos can also be explored through different locations. The present-day castle of Myrina was built in 1186 by Andronikos I Komnenos and covers 144 stremmata. Poliochni is an Early Bronze Age settlement credited with early forms of social and urban organization. In Moudros, the Treaty of Moudros between Turkey and the Allies was signed in 1918. These three themes span different periods, from the Early Bronze Age through the medieval castle to a 20th-century treaty.

Traditions, Activities and Local Cuisine

Other cultural attractions on Limnos include the Museum of Maritime Tradition and Sponge Fishing in Nea Koutali, which opened on 1 July 2006, and the traditional horse races in Kalliopi, held every year for the feast of Saint George. Check current opening details separately before visiting the museum. The races, by contrast, are tied to a specific annual occasion, so when planning, it is worth checking whether your trip coincides with the feast.

The eastern beaches of Limnos offer suitable conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Organized schools cater to both experienced participants and beginners. Check current providers and offerings in advance. Local products are another distinct feature: Limnos is known for the cheeses Kalathaki and Melichloro, made from sheep’s and goat’s milk. The island also produces the red wine varieties Limnio and Kalambaki, as well as Muscat of Alexandria. When choosing accommodation and deciding what to focus on during your trip, you can distinguish between Kontias’s local architectural and artistic features and other aspects of Limnos.
