Agios Ioannis–Kaspakas Beach is about 1,200 metres long. On its southern side, a hiking trail leads from the area of the last walls to the Katsaiti stream; the stream area is also known as Kremasta Nera. Nearby, you can also find a prehistoric site on Poliochni Hill and the Kaspakas waterfalls. At Agios Ioannis, coast, a named route, and cultural and natural features come together. When planning your trip, it is especially helpful to decide whether you want to focus on a beach stay, a trail with a clear destination, or the seasonal aspect of the waterfalls.

Beach and hiking trail in Agios Ioannis

The approximate length of 1,200 metres gives the beach a clear sense of scale. On its southern side, the trail leads from the area of the last walls to the Katsaiti stream. This puts an extensive stretch of coast and a route with a named destination side by side as distinct ways of experiencing the area. The stream area is also known as Kremasta Nera. This makes it easy to distinguish between the coastal setting and a trail with a clear destination when planning your visit: the length refers to the beach, while the route is identified by its starting area and the stream as its destination.

Archaeological site and waterfalls nearby

A prehistoric site was discovered on Poliochni Hill near Agios Ioannis. For travellers interested in cultural history, it is an archaeological point of interest nearby, alongside the beach and the trail to the stream.

The Kaspakas waterfalls are also nearby. Spring is considered the best time to visit because of the heavy rainfall. Rainfall and water conditions vary; if the waterfalls are important to your trip, check current conditions in advance.

Lesbos: more cultural and natural attractions

On Lesbos itself, Mytilini offers a different focus on cultural history. The New Archaeological Museum of Mytilini opened in a new building in 1999; its collection is dedicated to Hellenistic and Roman Lesbos. The Ancient Theater of Mytilini is built entirely of marble. Its horseshoe-shaped cavea is cut into volcanic rock, measures 107 metres in diameter, and has seating for 10,000 spectators. Mytilini Castle consists of the Upper, Middle, and Lower Castles.

The geological history of Lesbos is another distinct subject. The Museum of Natural History of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos presents the geo-historical development of Lesbos and the Aegean in its permanent exhibitions. Upright petrified trunks and their fully developed root systems show that the trees of the Petrified Forest were fossilised where they originally grew. On The Paths of the Lava, hikers can see Europe’s largest upright tree trunk: it is 7.02 metres tall and has a circumference of 8.58 metres.

Nature watching on Lesbos also has a seasonal focus: spring and autumn are considered ideal seasons for birdwatching. The island’s wetlands are refuges and breeding grounds for many rare and endangered bird species. This differs from the spring recommendation for the Kaspakas waterfalls, which is based on heavy rainfall.
