Kaspakas is one of the oldest villages on Limnos, built amphitheatrically on a slope of Agios Athanasios Hill. Its hillside location gives the choice of where to stay a clear point of reference: the village itself is a destination in its own right, while other themes on Limnos broaden your perspective beyond the village. If you are looking for accommodation in Kaspakas, you can first decide whether you mainly want to experience village life and customs or also include the island’s landscapes, history, and regional products in your travel plans.

The Village and Its Carnival Customs

Kaspakas’s carnival customs include “Μτσούν’ στουν Κάσπακα”, “Το μοίρασμα τ’ αλόγ’”, and “Ο γάμος του κιαχαγιά”.

Seasons and Nearby Destinations

Spring is the most suitable season to visit the Káspakas waterfalls because of the heavier rainfall. The waterfalls are about three kilometers from Kaspakas. Agios Ioannis Beach is about two kilometers away and has cafés, restaurants, and tavernas. This makes the beach closer to the village than the waterfalls and offers a different focus for an excursion. Check which businesses are currently open before your visit.

Landscapes and Seasons on Limnos

Near Katalakkos on Limnos are the Ammothines, a 70-stremma area of sand dunes inland, away from the coast. Falakra features volcanic formations attributed to the meeting of lava and sea. These two landscapes offer different points of interest: dunes far from the coast and formations whose origin is linked to lava and the sea. If you want to get a sense of Limnos’s landscapes, you can distinguish between these features without focusing only on the coast.

The seasons also offer a point of comparison: thousands of migratory birds use Lemnos each spring and autumn as a stopover on their long journeys between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Spring is also considered the most suitable time to visit the Káspakas waterfalls; bird migration on Limnos takes place in autumn as well.

Historic Sites and Culture on Limnos

Poliochni is an Early Bronze Age settlement with early forms of social and urban organization. The Treaty of Moudros between Turkey and the Allies was signed in Moudros in 1918. The present-day castle of Myrina was built by Andronikos I Komnenos in 1186 and covers 144 stremmata. These places offer different points of historical interest: a Bronze Age settlement, an event from 1918, and a castle with a medieval history.

The Museum of Maritime Tradition and Sponge Fishing is located in Nea Koutali on Limnos and opened on July 1, 2006. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening hours in advance. The Allied Cemetery on the road from Moudros to Roussopouli holds hundreds of those killed in the Gallipoli Campaign.

Traditions, Water Sports, and Regional Products

Traditional horse races are held in Kalliopi every year for the Feast of Saint George. The eastern beaches of Limnos offer suitable conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing, with organized schools operating there for experienced participants and beginners. If water sports are part of your trip, check in advance which providers are currently operating.

Regional products also give Limnos a distinctive culinary profile. The cheeses Kalathaki and Melichloro are made from sheep’s and goat’s milk. The red wine varieties Limnio, also known as Kalambaki, and Muscat of Alexandria are produced on Lemnos. Together with the cultural and landscape themes, these products offer another focus for travel planning, without conflating the village character of Kaspakas with the island’s entire range of attractions.
