Diedorf combines an early documentary mention with the history of the narrow-gauge railway. The Feldatal Cycle Path also passes through Diedorf and Fischbach. Nearby, Kuhkopf is an example of dry and semi-dry grassland, some of which is characterised by centuries-old pollarded beeches. When planning a visit, local history, a named cycling route and a distinctive landscape feature thus come together.

Diedorf and the History of the Feldabahn

Diedorf was first mentioned in a document on 17 February 778, under the name Diodorphono. Another historical development was the expansion of the narrow-gauge railway, which brought prosperity to Diedorf and the entire Feldatal valley.

The first train ran on the Dorndorf–Kaltennordheim line on 22 June 1880. It was a narrow-gauge railway and was converted to standard gauge in 1934. This gives two clearly dated milestones in the railway’s history: the first train journey and the subsequent conversion. Both are part of the region’s transport history; the railway expansion brought prosperity to Diedorf and the entire Feldatal valley.

Cycling Route and Landscape near Diedorf

The Feldatal Cycle Path passes through Diedorf and Fischbach. If you include the route in your plans, check the latest route information before setting off. The railway line is part of the village’s history, while the cycle path is a separate route that runs through Diedorf.

Kuhkopf near Diedorf adds a glimpse of the surrounding landscape to this local and transport history. Dry and semi-dry grasslands can be found there, some of which are characterised by centuries-old pollarded beeches. The description thus covers both the different types of grassland and the old trees that characterise parts of the area.

The Wider Regional Context: Dermbach

In the wider travel destination of Dermbach, the Museum of the Thuringian Rhön presents traditional crafts such as weaving and carving, as well as historical tools, traditional costumes, furniture, agricultural equipment and handicrafts. Its cultural and social history topics include the history of the Dermbach administrative district, the Peasants’ War in the Vorder Rhön and cork processing in Dermbach. It also covers small industrial businesses along the Feldabahn, built in 1880, the Feldabahn as a narrow-gauge railway, the legend of Rhönpaulus and the 1866 clashes between Prussian and Bavarian forces in the Dermbach area. If you are planning a museum visit, check the current opening hours in advance.

Dermbach’s architectural history can also be traced through a range of examples. The Evangelical church on Kirchberg is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and was built in 1714 on the foundations of an earlier church in the Baroque style known as Bauernbarock. Dermbach Palace was built in 1707 by Adalbert von Schleifras, Prince-Abbot of Fulda. Three simple Baroque-style buildings enclose a spacious rectangular courtyard. Dermbach is also home to the smallest half-timbered church in southern Thuringia, dating from 1677.

Another feature of the wider travel destination is Ibengarten, a yew forest above Glattbach, a district of Dermbach. The Rhönpaulus-Wald Ibengarten Adventure Trail is seven kilometres from Dermbach and two kilometres from Glattbach, each way. The return route follows the same path down Neuberg. These two figures make it easy to compare the different route lengths; for planning purposes, note that the stated distances are each one way.
