Bad Liebenstein combines historic parks and theater history with trails for short and longer excursions. The climb to the castle hill takes about 25 minutes, while the Kultur-NaTour takes around three and a half hours. If you are looking for accommodation, these different options can help you plan your stay around your interests.

Parks and Castle Hill

Altenstein Palace and its 160-hectare landscaped park are part of Bad Liebenstein. Garden designers Hermann Fürst von Pückler-Muskau, Eduard Petzold, and Peter Joseph Lenné contributed to the park’s design. The park thus represents a designed landscape whose history is also associated with these three names.

The Historic Spa Park was laid out in 1799 and, together with the adjoining castle hill, covers almost 30 hectares. By comparison, the landscaped park at Altenstein Palace is considerably larger, at 160 hectares. These two figures give a useful impression of the different scales of Bad Liebenstein’s parks.

The Historic Spa Park has a Kneipp facility and a barefoot trail. Access to these facilities is subject to a construction-related notice; check local conditions before your visit. This lets you take current notices into account when planning a visit to the spa park.

The ruins of Bad Liebenstein Castle stand on a 460-meter-high hill above the town. A hiking trail leads from the Kurhaus up to the castle hill near the ruins in about 25 minutes. Visits to the castle ruins are possible by prior arrangement; check the access conditions in advance.

Trails for Different Time Budgets

The Kultur-NaTour is a moderately difficult circular route covering 11.0 kilometers. It starts and ends at the Bad Liebenstein Tourist Information Office. The ascent and descent are each listed as 225 meters, and the duration is around 3 hours and 30 minutes. Along the way, the route passes Altenstein Palace and descends to the Luisenthal Waterfall.

The difference between the two walking times is clear when planning: the climb to the castle hill is listed as taking about 25 minutes, while the Kultur-NaTour takes around three and a half hours. If you are planning a longer hike, the circular route provides specific details on distance, elevation gain, and difficulty.

Three terrain therapy trails are also among the ways to enjoy healthy exercise in nature in Bad Liebenstein. Alongside the moderately difficult circular route, these offer further options for outdoor exercise.

Theater, Architecture, and a Cave

The Comödienhaus Bad Liebenstein is one of the oldest theater buildings in Thuringia. It was built in the spring or summer of 1800 at the instigation of Duke Georg I of Saxe-Meiningen. Since opening, it has been a venue for theater culture, with comedies, operettas, operas, and other performances.

Another historic landmark is the Wandelhalle, built in 1913 in the neoclassical style. Together with the history of the Comödienhaus, it offers another architectural point of interest for a stay focused on culture and architectural history.

The Altenstein Cave is located in Schweina, a district of Bad Liebenstein. It is Thuringia’s oldest show cave and features, among other things, a cave dome, an underground lake, a stream, light and sound installations, and a 3D model of the cave. It is also a habitat for several protected bat species.

Animal Park and Christmas Eve in Schweina

The Bad Liebenstein Animal Park covers five hectares and is home to about 60 animal species and around 300 animals. There is a playground for children. The figures for the area and animal population give a specific impression of the size of the animal park; the playground is an additional amenity for young visitors.

A recurring annual event is the torch burning on Antoniusberg in Schweina: it takes place on December 24 and attracts many visitors on Christmas Eve. Check the specific program before traveling if you would like to include this tradition in your plans.

Bad Liebenstein offers a variety of ways to shape your stay: park history, theater and architecture, trails for different time budgets, and an annual tradition in Schweina. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider which of these options you would like to include in your travel plans.
