In Frankenroda, local circular hiking trails, a long-distance cycle route and historic destinations come together. When planning your visit, you can choose between hikes with viewpoints, a stage on the Werra Valley Cycle Route and a closer look at the town’s history. The wood museum is another local attraction; visits must be arranged by phone.
Circular Trails and the Werra Valley Cycle Route
There are eight circular hiking trails with viewpoints around Frankenroda. If you want to hike, you’ll find several loop walks in the surrounding area. Before setting out, it’s worth checking the current trail conditions, as they may change.
The Werra Valley Cycle Route offers a different way to plan your outings: the approximately 300-kilometre route passes directly through Frankenroda. This puts the local circular trails alongside a long-distance cycle route. Depending on whether you prefer walking loop trails or cycling a longer route, you can focus on different experiences.
Local History and Visits
For visitors interested in history, the courthouse built in 1508 on Brückenstraße is particularly worth seeing. The Frankenroda Wood Museum adds to the local attractions. Visits can be arranged by phone at (036924) 3 09 90, so you’ll need to book your visit in advance.
Another historic landmark lies on the Werra Valley Cycle Route: the former Probsteizella monastery is about two kilometres from Frankenroda. Calling it a “former monastery” reflects the site’s historical character; its location on the cycle route also places it within the surrounding area of the route.
Culture in the Wider Destination of Amt Creuzburg
The wider destination of Amt Creuzburg also offers historical and cultural attractions that differ from those in Frankenroda. In Creuzburg, the permanent exhibition at the castle museum in Creuzburg Castle covers the history of the castle, town and justice system, as well as the history of the Landgraves of Thuringia. Its topics also include Michael Praetorius, a composer and music theorist who lived from around 1572 to 1621. Creuzburg Castle was built between 1165 and 1170. Its historical connection to Elisabeth remains a supposition: the castle was probably a favourite place of Saint Elisabeth.
Creuzburg also has buildings from different centuries. The stone Romanesque Werra Bridge was built in 1223; the Liborius Chapel beside the bridge dates from 1499. The specific details about the bridge and chapel offer a different point of reference in time from the castle, which was built in the 12th century.
In Mihla, the museum in the town hall covers rural life, the nobility and wars in western Thuringia. Mihla is also home to the Red Castle, a Renaissance half-timbered castle completed in 1581. The museum and castle offer different historical perspectives: one focuses on social topics, the other on the architecture of a castle.
There are several signposted circular hiking trails around Creuzburg, with varying levels of difficulty and lengths ranging from 2.5 to 14 kilometres. Creuzburg also has two boat moorings with picnic areas. Before setting out, check whether these facilities are still in operation.
