Krayenberggemeinde combines local history with trails through the Werra and Felda valleys and the Krayenberg region. In Dorndorf, the local history museum tells the story of crafts, industry and life in the village; in Dietlas, Feldeck Moated Castle bears witness to a long history. There are also paved hiking and forest trails, viewpoints and a cycle path through the Werra floodplain. When planning your visit, you can therefore balance cultural highlights with outdoor activities.

History in Dorndorf and Dietlas

Since 2007, the Dorndorf Local History Museum has been housed in the village’s former print shop. Its extensive collection explores the development of crafts and industry as well as the lives of the people of Dorndorf; it also focuses on notable figures and artists. The combination of a former print shop, working history and everyday life brings the museum’s connection to the village to life on several levels.

Feldeck Moated Castle lies on the Felda in the district of Dietlas. The site has been documented since 1376; in 1626, it passed into the possession of the Lords of Buttler as a moated castle. The former residential tower is part of the overall complex; depressions in the park give an idea of the former moats. The building’s history and traces in the landscape thus offer distinct points of reference.

Nearby is Krayenburg Castle. It is one of the oldest stone castle complexes in the Werra Valley; its castle site is in the municipality of Tiefenort and is now a protected archaeological and architectural monument.

Hiking between the valley and the Krayenberg

The “Vorderrhön” Dorndorf hiking club and the municipal administration have developed five circular hiking trails in the Werra and Felda valleys and the Krayenberg region. The trails run between the hills and the valley, around and through the districts of Krayenberggemeinde; together with possible connecting routes, they cover 57 kilometres. The 57 kilometres therefore refer to the network including possible extensions, not to a single circular hike. Paved hiking and forest trails are available for hiking and Nordic walking; there are also numerous rest areas with tables and benches, as well as viewpoints overlooking the unified municipality, the Werra Valley and the Felda Valley.

White storks have nested in the Werra floodplain at Merkers every year since 2011. This recurring feature of the natural landscape adds another dimension to the cultural and historical points of interest in Dorndorf and Dietlas. A new cycle path runs from Tiefenort below the Krayenberg, through the Werra floodplain, to Merkers. Unlike the circular hiking trails, this route has two named endpoints, making it easy to distinguish the circular walks from the cycle route by their layout.

A wider view of Wartburgkreis

The wider travel destination of Wartburgkreis offers further regional culture and landscape experiences. With a ring wall measuring more than 340 metres in circumference and an enclosed area of 7,400 square metres, Creuzburg Castle is one of the larger Romanesque castle complexes in Germany. The park at Altenstein Palace has around 20 kilometres of paths, including a 4.3-kilometre circular trail. The palace also houses a Brahms memorial site with an exhibition of letters and printed works documenting the close ties between Johannes Brahms and Duke George II of Saxe-Meiningen. Timetable and passenger information for bus services, hiking buses, buses with bicycle trailers and rail services is available for the Wartburg region. Check the latest timetables before travelling.
