Dankmarshausen combines village history with a landscape of importance beyond the region: a late Gothic sandstone church and the local history room shape the village’s cultural character, while the nearby Rhäden is an important wetland for breeding and migratory birds. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: would you like to explore architectural history and village life in earlier times, or focus on floodplain landscapes and birdwatching? Both themes reveal different sides of the destination.

The Rhäden: floodplain landscape and a stopover for birds

The Rhäden, between Dankmarshausen and Obersuhl, is a wetland of importance beyond the region for many breeding birds and one of the most important stopover areas in Hesse and Thuringia for migratory birds along the western route. The Rhäden nature reserve in the surrounding area is a 240-hectare floodplain landscape of statewide importance as a breeding and stopover area and as a habitat for numerous bird species. Its protected status reflects its value as both a stopover and breeding area and a habitat, while the western route draws particular attention to bird migration. The 240 hectares are equivalent to 2.4 square kilometres.

A cycling route runs around the Rhäden, with several observation stands and informative signs for all age groups. The area offers both opportunities for observation and information about the landscape. Dankmarshausen’s surroundings can also be explored on foot or by bicycle along numerous well-maintained, signposted trails.

A named cycling tour also passes through the village: the “Werratal – Sallmannshausen – Rhäden” tour runs through Dankmarshausen. Check current route conditions before setting out.

Local history room, church and village history

The Dankmarshausen local history room displays a living room, a kitchen and a bedroom, as well as exhibits on shoemaking, tailoring, baking, saddlery, agriculture and sheep farming. The collection therefore ranges from actual living spaces to craft and agricultural activities, presenting different aspects of village life side by side.

A bakehouse was set up in a vacant half-timbered house next to the local history room. The parish well in front of the rectory recalls the meeting place where the village’s water carriers gathered in the 16th century. These features complement the insights into domestic and working life with a reference to a shared village activity.

Another cultural highlight is the late Gothic sandstone church. Built in 1431, it shapes Dankmarshausen’s skyline and is considered a gem among the region’s village churches. Unlike the local history room, which shows everyday spaces and activities, the focus here is on the historic building itself. You can therefore choose which cultural themes of the village to focus on according to your interests: architecture, former occupations and living spaces, or local memories associated with the parish well.
