Wutha-Farnroda combines insights into geology and craftsmanship with traces of local history and paths through the landscape. If you plan your stay around your interests, you’ll find a range of highlights here: the Hörselberg Museum, historic mills and railway heritage, buildings in Farnroda, and views along the Rennsteig.

Geology, Baking and Railway History

Right at the foot of the Hörsel Mountains, the Hörselberg Museum is housed in a listed complex of buildings. It includes a church, the old schoolhouse, the rectory with its parsonage, stable, barn, washhouse and bakehouse. The variety of building types gives a visit to the museum a distinctive setting. At the museum, unique fossil finds provide insights into the geology and formation of the Hörsel Mountains.

Another exhibition focuses on the region’s baking traditions. Old baking machines and a variety of kitchen utensils sit alongside a “baker’s shop like the ones in Grandma’s day.” The Hörselberg Museum thus brings natural history and everyday culture together: you can explore fossils and the formation of the landscape, or take a look at the world of work associated with baking.

The open-air “Rühler Bimmel” exhibition in Wutha tells another side of the area’s history. It documents the former route of the Ruhla railway, including stations, stops and industrial sidings. The exhibition also features an original section of track that survived the dismantling work after the line was closed. The focus is therefore not only on the former railway route, but also on a surviving piece of infrastructure.

Mills, a park and historic buildings

In Schönau, the Hörsel Mill lies right on the Hörsel River. This old sawmill is the only one of the village’s three mills that is still in operation. In Farnroda, the castle park combines further local history with a place to relax and hold events: a pond and the adjoining festival grounds lie in the middle of the village. The park is also home to the tower of the former water castle, which dates back to the 12th century.

The Laurentius Church in Farnroda also has an unusual feature: its well-preserved bell tower stands separately and is unique in Germany. The church itself was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century.

The Hellwig Monument commemorates an event near Eichrodt on October 17, 1806. On that day, Lieutenant Friedrich Hellwig freed about 4,000 Prussian prisoners of war there.

The Hörsel Mountains and trails along the Rennsteig

The Hörsel Mountains form a striking, elongated ridge of Muschelkalk limestone in the area around Wutha-Farnroda. This landscape, rich in caves, includes the Kleiner Hörselberg at 426 metres above sea level, the Mittelberg and the Großer Hörselberg at 484 metres.

Those looking for views along the Rennsteig can find them on the “The Beautiful Unknowns” circular hiking trail. From there, the view stretches across the Hörsel Mountains, the Inselsberg, the Drachenstein and the Wartburg. Mosbach is also notable for its geography: the municipality of Wutha-Farnroda, through its Mosbach district, borders the Rennsteig.

Plan your journey and stay

Regional trains between Eisenach, Gotha and Erfurt stop in Wutha and Schönau. Check the timetable before travelling to make sure your journey matches the stops. When planning, you can choose between the train connections and the area’s different attractions, rather than treating every sight as part of a single walking tour.

Another option for spending time outdoors is the Waldbad Mosbach. This modern outdoor swimming pool has stainless-steel pools and solar-heated pool water. Together with the castle park, the museum exhibits and the scenic trails, it offers a range of themes to help you plan your trip: local and industrial history, geology, or the landscape along the Rennsteig.
