Treffurt combines half-timbered houses, architectural history and viewpoints with a local history museum covering topics related to the town and its crafts. For planning your trip, choose from cultural discoveries and a variety of landscapes: from a Gothic winged altarpiece and Normannstein Castle to views over the Werra Valley. You can focus your stay on architecture, a museum visit or hiking. In the Wartburg district, Creuzburg, more than 830 years old, is one of Germany’s larger Romanesque castle complexes, with a circuit of more than 340 metres along its outer wall and 7,400 square metres of enclosed space.
Half-timbered houses and architectural history
You can find notable half-timbered houses in Treffurt’s old town and in the historic centres of its districts. Treffurt Town Hall, with its large tower, was built in the 16th century. Its half-timbering was exposed during extensive renovation work in 1990. St Boniface’s Church dates back even further: it originated in the 13th century and includes, among other features, a Gothic winged altarpiece.
The Lords of Treffurt expanded the original keep and outer wall of Normannstein Castle into a representative complex. After the age of the knights, the Ganerben (joint heirs) resided at the castle until the 16th century and administered the town of Treffurt from there. The chapel building and gatehouse took on their present appearance after 1894.
The extensively renovated castle features the “Werraburgen über Werrafurten” exhibition, a castle restaurant and two wedding rooms in a historic setting. The exhibition and castle restaurant are currently closed.
Treffurt Local History Museum
The local history museum spans four floors and showcases crafts, geological finds, the Ganerbschaft (joint inheritance) and the town’s division into three parts. Other exhibition themes include traditional Werra pottery, regional geology and local cigar-making. In this way, craft-related themes are combined with insights into the town’s history and regional geology.
For children, the museum offers a treasure hunt with Rosalie the museum mouse. They can also experience how children learned in the past at an old school desk. Visits are available by arrangement with the tourist information office; please contact them in advance to arrange your visit.
Hiking trails and views
The “Lindenhecke” rest area on the Normannstein TOP hiking trail offers 360° panoramic views, and sun loungers invite you to linger. Check the condition of the loungers before your visit. Further along the TOP hiking trail, you can discover botanical highlights such as orchids and works of art along the Ars Natura trail.
The Leine-Werra Nature Park Trail leaves Treffurt via the 362-metre-high SĂĽlzenberg. From there, you can enjoy repeated views of the Werra Valley. The summit of Adolfsburg is also a popular hiking destination with magnificent views; the mountain is a 378-metre-high shell limestone hill.
The viewpoints each offer something different: a panoramic view from Lindenhecke, repeated valley views from SĂĽlzenberg or a summit view from Adolfsburg.
