In Buttlar, two nature trails with different themes and an art-historical feature in the Church of the Nativity of Mary shape the local attractions. The themed trail “Rediscover the Old” combines historic monuments with an orchard trail. The “Sängerwiese” is a nature trail between Buttlar and Bermbach. The trails therefore offer different focuses: one features monuments and regional fruit varieties, while the other highlights the history of a nature trail and its relationship to the landscape.

Nature Trails with Different Themes

The themed trail “Rediscover the Old” starts in the centre of Buttlar. Its orchard trail is dedicated to old regional fruit varieties, some of which have fallen into obscurity. Together with the historic monuments, this creates a trail theme that brings fruit-growing culture and traditional buildings together. Those interested in regional varieties will find a different way to explore the surroundings here than on a trail focused solely on the landscape.

The “Sängerwiese” nature trail leads from Buttlar to Bermbach and runs through the surrounding area along the southern slopes of Michelsberg, Kleiner Langer Berg and Wachkoppe. Its history dates back to 1975–1978, when the nature trail was created by the school’s nature conservation group in Buttlar. It was extensively redesigned between 1995 and 1997. These two periods also make the trail an example of long-term local commitment. To choose between the trails, consider their different focuses: “Rediscover the Old” brings together monuments and fruit varieties, while the Sängerwiese trail focuses on its route and history.

An Art-Historical Highlight in Buttlar

The Church of the Nativity of Mary offers another specific point of interest for culture enthusiasts: its altar was created by the sculptor Johann Neudecker the Elder in 1712. This dated work of art adds a religious and sculptural dimension to the trail themes. The local attractions can thus be explored from different perspectives, without reducing the nature trails to a single theme.

More Places to Visit in the Wartburg District

Looking beyond Buttlar to the Wartburg District reveals destinations with their own distinct attractions. At over 830 years old, Creuzburg Castle is one of Germany’s larger Romanesque castle complexes, with a curtain wall measuring more than 340 metres in circumference and an enclosed area of 7,400 square metres. These figures give a tangible sense of the complex’s architectural scale and make it a different kind of cultural experience from Buttlar’s trails and artistic highlights.

Altenstein Palace also offers several perspectives on the Wartburg District. Its park has around 20 kilometres of paths, including a 4.3-kilometre circular trail. The palace is also home to a Brahms memorial site: an exhibition of letters and printed works illustrates the close relationship between Johannes Brahms and Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen. Here, landscape and music history come together, while Buttlar has its own highlights in its nature trails and altar.

For regional history and craftsmanship, the Werra Valley Museum in Gerstungen Palace offers a different experience. Across 22 exhibition rooms, it presents the region’s history and showcases traditional crafts. Point Alpha, in turn, is an authentic Cold War site; a permanent exhibition in the House on the Border presents the history of the division of Germany. These destinations add museums and contemporary history to the range of things to explore in the Wartburg District.

Those who prefer spending time outdoors will find more trails with distinct themes in the Wartburg District. The sculpture trail covers approximately ten kilometres, from the sculpture park in Behringen to Hütscheroda and back. Sculptures on a variety of themes line the route. By comparison, the trails in Buttlar are defined by their connections to fruit varieties, monuments and the history of the nature trail. This makes it possible to choose a destination based on your interests, while keeping the regional attractions distinct from Buttlar’s local sights.
