Mihla can be explored in different ways: by bike, on foot, on the water or through its local history. Some routes pass through the town, while others lead from Mihla into named landscapes. An outdoor swimming pool and a boat landing add to the options available locally.

Cycling, water and trails

The Werra Valley Cycle Route and the Lauter Valley Cycle Route pass through Mihla. More than 100 kilometres of marked hiking trails lead from Mihla into the Lauter Valley and the mountainous regions of Hainich National Park. The routes therefore differ in where they lead: the cycle routes pass through the town, while the hiking trails lead from here into the named landscapes. Check current local route information before setting out on a hike.

Water hiking is popular on the Werra, and Mihla has a boat landing. These are two specific things to note if you want water to be part of your trip. If you would rather go swimming, Mihla has the “Dr. Ernst Wiedemann” outdoor swimming pool: its solar-heated stainless-steel pool has a swimming area and a non-swimming area. Check current operating information before your visit; before a water-hiking trip, check the local operating conditions.

The different options offer distinct experiences: cycle routes pass through Mihla, marked hiking trails continue into the Lauter Valley and the mountainous regions of the Hainich, while water hiking and the outdoor pool each offer their own water-focused activities. You can first decide what kind of activity you want to shape your trip, rather than treating all the options as a single itinerary.

Architecture and history in Mihla

Mihla itself also has specific cultural and historical attractions. The Red Castle was completed in 1581 and is a half-timbered castle in the Renaissance style. The museum in Mihla Town Hall covers rural life, the nobility and wars in West Thuringia. The castle and the museum focus on different things: the former on building style and architecture, the latter on living conditions and the history of the region.

Amt Creuzburg: more history and landscapes

Mihla is part of the larger destination of Amt Creuzburg. Creuzburg itself is a district and the namesake of the town of Amt Creuzburg. Creuzburg Castle was built between 1165 and 1170. Creuzburg is also home to the stone Romanesque Werra Bridge, built in 1223, with the Liborius Chapel, dating from 1499, right beside it. The dates show the difference in their construction periods: the bridge dates from the 13th century, while the chapel is from the late 15th century.

The permanent exhibition at the castle museum in Creuzburg Castle covers the history of the castle, the town and the judiciary, as well as the history of the Landgraves of Thuringia. Another exhibition topic is Michael Praetorius, who lived from around 1572 to 1621 and was a composer and music theorist. The story thus ranges from the history of the buildings and town to the history of music.

The larger Amt Creuzburg area also offers a specific starting point for hikes: several signposted circular trails of varying difficulty, ranging from 2.5 to 14 kilometres, lie around Creuzburg. These distances refer to the circular trails around Creuzburg; by contrast, the more than 100 kilometres of marked trails lead from Mihla into the Lauter Valley and the mountainous regions of Hainich National Park. Creuzburg also has two boat landings with rest areas. Check that the facilities are open before setting out.
