Dragon Gorge is a walkable gorge with rock walls that are 250 million years old, located on the Steinbach stream. Weather, safety closures or nature conservation measures may affect access, so check conditions before your visit. Cultural History at Specific Sites
Wartburg Castle, almost a thousand years old, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its richly decorated buildings and rooms illustrate medieval and late Romanesque architecture and ways of life. The castle is associated with Martin Luther’s translation of the Bible, as well as the life and work of Saint Elizabeth. These connections give a visit a broad historical scope, which continues at the city’s Luther sites.
Luther House presents Martin Luther as a student, reformer and Bible translator. The exhibition includes medieval art treasures, works by Cranach and Johann Sebastian Bach’s baptismal record. St. George’s Church is Bach’s baptismal church; it was founded at the end of the 12th century by Ludwig III. The 1817 Wartburg Festival of the student fraternities also originated at this church. St. George’s therefore brings together Bach’s biography and a historic event from 1817, while Luther House focuses on the stages of Luther’s life.

The “automobile welt eisenach” brings together different perspectives on automotive history. A historic Dixi repair workshop from 1912 covers around 60 square meters. It includes twelve original machine tools powered by transmission belts, as well as a carpentry and wheelwright workshop. The museum also displays vehicles, body design studies, prototypes and construction plans in a historic factory hall. The workshop and collection offer different points of interest: the working areas and their machinery on one hand, vehicles and designs on the other.
