Walk along the treetop path in Hainich National Park, 24 metres above the forest canopy; from the treehouse, you can look out over the national park. Unstrut-Hainich district is part of the Wartburg Hainich World Heritage Region. Nature and culture reveal themselves here from different perspectives: from trails through the treetops and a springtime hiking route to gardens and historical landmarks in the towns.

Treetops and Views in Hainich

If you are comfortable with heights, you can climb the tree tower to a platform 40 metres above the ground. From there, the view stretches across Hainich as far as the Thuringian Basin. The height figures refer to two different points: the path runs at a height of 24 metres, while the tree tower’s platform is 40 metres up. This distinguishes the perspective from the path among the treetops from the sweeping panorama from the tower.

The treetop path begins 200 metres from the Thiemsburg National Park Centre. Its exhibition features films, large-format image walls, hands-on stations and interactive elements. The centre also offers a fully accessible media guide; tablets and headphones are available to borrow. There is also a large hiking car park, a food service, toilets and a public transport bus stop. As operating conditions may change, it is advisable to check these details before travelling.

Explore Trails and Landscapes

The Betteleichenweg trail passes cultural and historical landmarks in the national park, including the Ihlefelder Kreuz, the Eiserne Hand and Ihlefeld. In spring, it winds through flowering stands of wild garlic and corydalis. Cultural history and seasonal nature come together along the trail; the flowering season is specifically in spring.

A different way to experience the landscape is route 1 of the Erlebnis-Draisine rail bike. It crosses the Lengenfeld Viaduct, which is 244 metres long, 24 metres high and has eight arches. Check current route availability before travelling.

Gardens in Bad Langensalza

Bad Langensalza’s rose garden displays almost 450 rose species and varieties on a former factory site covering 18,000 square metres. The Botanical Garden offers a different focus: there you can see rare cacti and yuccas from South America. The two gardens offer different ways to explore plants, from a large rose collection to species from South America.

Medieval Traces and Craftsmanship

Mühlhausen’s churches, town wall and defensive towers combine to create a multifaceted picture of its history. The town has eleven medieval churches. To this day, 2.2 kilometres of the oldest, inner town wall remain; Mühlhausen also has a preserved inner ring of town walls with numerous defensive towers. The viewing platform of the Rabenturm tower is 34.2 metres high and offers panoramic views over Mühlhausen and the surrounding area.

Museums also bring a range of subjects to life. The Thuringian Pharmacy Museum in Haus Rosenthal presents the history of pharmacy from the 18th to the 20th century across 276 square metres. The small museum at the Opfermoor Vogtei displays original finds from archaeological excavations of the settlement and its ritual site. In Schlotheim, the rope-making museum preserves a landmark of the area’s traditional rope-making craft in a faithful reconstruction of a spinning track. The exhibits span archaeological finds, pharmacy and local craft traditions.

Thuringia as the Broader Context

As part of the wider destination of Thuringia, Hainich was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011 as part of the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of Europe. Wartburg Castle near Eisenach is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is associated with Martin Luther’s translation of the New Testament. These wider Thuringia connections provide a broader context, while the places and experiences in Unstrut-Hainich district retain their own character.
