Near Anrode lies the former Cistercian monastery of Anrode. Its location in the valley of the Luhne and the GieĂźe, in front of the forests of Hollau, connects the history of the monastery complex with a striking landscape. This makes the site a practical starting point for including historical and cultural topics in your travel plans alongside Anrode.

Anrode Monastery: History and Present-Day Use

The monastery’s history dates back to the 13th century: the old church village at the site was revived by the newly founded monastery. During the Peasants’ War in the 16th century, Anrode Monastery was attacked and looted; a fire destroyed it down to its foundations. In 1810, the convent was closed by decree. This historic landmark is therefore associated with the revival of a church village, as well as destruction and its later dissolution.

The stables are also in use today: a monthly animal and farmers’ market is held there. From March to October, the market takes place on the second Saturday of each month. If you plan to visit the market, check the specific date in advance.

The excursion restaurant “Schinkenkrug” is part of the site’s later use. Since September 2013, it has been located in the former steward’s apartment in the Lower Barn, also known as the Monastery Barn. This links a specific place within the complex to its history of use. If you plan to dine there, check the latest opening information before your visit.

Culture and Leisure in Dingelstädt

Since 2001, the Breikuchenfest has been held every summer in Dingelstädt as a town festival. The program includes traditional events hosted by town associations, shows, musical events, and culinary offerings. Its recurring summer date provides a clear seasonal highlight; when planning your trip, it is worth timing your stay to coincide with the actual festival dates.

The Kanonenbahn Cycle Route offers another way to explore Dingelstädt. It runs for about 32 kilometers from Dingelstädt in the Eichsfeld district of Thuringia to Frieda in the Werra-Meißner district of Hesse and is considered easy to cycle. Along the way are six tunnels and four bridges. The route’s length, endpoints, and features provide practical guidance for choosing a tour, but do not indicate a specific cycling time.

The revitalized UnstrutWelle indoor swimming pool reopened in September 2026 and is open to visitors year-round. As operating information can change, check the latest details before your visit.

Churches and Architectural History in Dingelstädt

St. Gertrudis Parish Church was consecrated in 1855 as a three-aisled church in the Gothic style. A church had already stood on the same plot, documented in records from the 14th century. The date when this first church was built is unknown; the present parish church is the third known church on the plot. The chronology thus combines an attested early reference with an unknown construction date and the later church building.

The mill complex at Mühlhäuser Straße 11 features a representative Renaissance building with an elaborately decorated portal. At the pilgrimage church “Maria im Busch,” even the name points to a local feature: it derives from a slope that was once covered with bushes. The two buildings offer contrasting highlights—one showcases the design of a Renaissance building, while the other preserves the traditional explanation of a church name.
