Three distinct interests come together in Körner: the historic monastery church and farm activities in Volkenroda, as well as the Unstrut-Werra Cycle Route through the town. The monastery complex and school farm are in Volkenroda, a district of the municipality of Körner. You can plan your trip around whether architecture and religious activities, farm activities or cycling should be the main focus.
Monastery grounds: services, market and architecture
The former Cistercian Church of St. Mary was consecrated in 1150. Services and prayer times are held in the church every day. During the summer months, the Christ Pavilion is used for Sunday services and daily midday prayers. The pavilion incorporates steel, glass, exposed concrete and marble as its building materials. The structures therefore differ in what stands out: St. Mary offers a dated piece of church history, while the pavilion’s choice of materials takes centre stage. Religious programmes and times may change; check the latest information if you would like to plan your visit around a service or prayer time.
A farmers’ market is held at the Volkenroda monastery estate on the first Saturday of every month from March to November. Check the latest dates before travelling if you plan to visit the market. Coffee is available at the monastery gate and in the monastery shop; check availability if you are planning to stop there.
The activities vary by season when it comes to planning your visit: the pavilion is used during the summer months, the farmers’ market runs from March to November, and nativity scene workshops take place in the run-up to Christmas. If any of these is a deciding factor for your trip, check the specific dates before travelling.
The Christ Pavilion, the monastery church and other buildings on the monastery grounds can be reached via step-free or low-barrier access suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Conditions at individual entrances may change; check them before your visit if you rely on accessible access.
School farm, studio and meditation trail
Visitors can see raccoons at the school farm in Volkenroda. Children and families can also get up close to goats, rabbits, donkeys and other animals there. The Discovery Barn is aimed at children and young people; they can meet animals up close, explore nature, investigate, play and try things out. Animal encounters are thus complemented by opportunities to explore and experiment.
The Open Studio offers the chance to work freely with wood, while nativity scene workshops take place in the run-up to Christmas. This means the open-ended craft activity differs in timing from the explicitly seasonal workshop format.
The “Ausweg” meditation trail starts directly behind the farm; its stations invite visitors to pause and reflect. This makes it possible to round off a farm visit with a trail featuring stops for a break.
Cycling and accommodation
The Unstrut-Werra Cycle Route passes through Körner. If you are planning a cycling trip, Körner is therefore a specific point of reference on the route. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting off.
Pilgrims can stay in simple, affordable accommodation at the pilgrim hostel in Volkenroda. The intended guests are important here: pilgrims can include the hostel in their plans and should confirm availability before travelling.
