Oppershausen offers a clear connection to hiking and a specific local history: an easy circular hike passes through the castle park and by St. Mary’s Church; a water castle was built here in 1395. Since 2023, the village has been part of the Wartburg-Hainich World Heritage Region. The local focus is therefore on the circular trail and history, while the wider Unstrut-Hainich destination has further nature and cultural attractions to offer.

Circular Trail and Water Castle History

The “32nd Thuringian Hiking Day – Tour 10 Schlosspark/Kirche Oppershausen” is an easy 7.1-kilometre circular hike. It starts and ends in Kammerforst, passes through the castle park and goes by St. Mary’s Church in Oppershausen. The distance and easy rating give you specific guidance for planning your hike. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

One dated reference point in the village’s history is the water castle: Richard von Sebecke had it built in Oppershausen in 1395. The castle and church offer different points of interest—the former as a historic building project, the latter as a stop on the hiking trail. This connects finding your way around the village with a specific glimpse into its history, without requiring a larger cultural programme.

In the wider Unstrut-Hainich destination

Oppershausen has been part of the Wartburg-Hainich World Heritage Region since 2023. The Unstrut-Hainich district is also part of this World Heritage Region. The wider Unstrut-Hainich destination offers other distinct attractions to choose from: nature in the Hainich, the history of Mühlhausen and museums and gardens in Bad Langensalza.

The treetop walkway runs 24 metres above the Hainich canopy; from the treetop house, you can look out over Hainich National Park. The tree tower’s platform is a separate attraction: visitors with a head for heights can climb it to a platform 40 metres above the ground. From there, the view extends across the Hainich to the Thuringian Basin. Check current operating conditions before your visit.

The treetop walkway starts 200 metres from the Thiemsburg National Park Centre. There is a large hiking car park, a food and drink establishment, toilets and a public transport bus stop there. The National Park Centre presents its exhibition using films, large-format image panels, interactive exhibits and hands-on stations. The media guide is fully accessible; tablets and headphones are available to borrow. Check the facilities and services again before travelling.

Mühlhausen offers a different focus: the town has eleven medieval churches and a surviving inner town-wall ring with numerous defensive towers. A 2.2-kilometre stretch of Mühlhausen’s inner, oldest town wall remains. The viewing platform of the Rabenturm is 34.2 metres high and offers panoramic views over Mühlhausen and the surrounding area. The churches, town wall and viewpoint offer different ways to explore the town’s history.

In Bad Langensalza, garden and pharmaceutical history come together. The Thuringian Pharmacy Museum in Haus Rosenthal presents the history of pharmacy from the 18th to the 20th century across 276 square metres. The Rose Garden features almost 450 rose species and varieties on a former factory site covering 18,000 square metres. In the Botanical Garden, you can see rare cacti and yuccas from South America. In addition to hiking and town history, the wider destination therefore offers exhibitions and botanical collections.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether Oppershausen itself or the wider Unstrut-Hainich destination will shape your stay. The circular trail and local history describe the area’s local focus; the destinations mentioned add other themes. Which of them you include depends on your travel plans.
