Oberstadt is a clustered village first documented in 1317. Together with well-marked woodland and hiking trails nearby and annual festivals, the village brings together local history, culture and walking excursions.

Oberstadt and its location

Oberstadt is in the northern part of the Hildburghausen district, at the foot of the Thuringian Forest, around 15 km southwest of Suhl and about 7 km from Themar. The village layout and the year 1317 highlight different aspects: one describes the settlement type, while the other marks the first documented mention. Together, they offer both a sense of the village’s physical form and a fixed point of reference in its written history.

Attractions, festivals and trails

The church is one of Oberstadt’s attractions. A Christmas market and a fair are also held every year. Dates and programmes for both events vary; if you would like to plan your stay around one of them, check the date and programme in advance. The festivals are cultural events with set dates, while the marked trails turn your attention to the surrounding area.

You can explore the area around Oberstadt on foot via well-marked woodland and hiking trails. The 692 m-high Schneeberg is also a popular destination nearby. Alongside the trails, this gives you a named destination with a specific elevation. When planning, you can decide whether to focus more on the trails or on a particular excursion destination.

The Hildburghausen district as a wider setting

Beyond Oberstadt, the Hildburghausen district offers a variety of landscape features. The district includes an extensive, contiguous woodland in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park; the Vessertal Biosphere Reserve is another defining feature. Hildburghausen is also an important part of the Thuringian Forest holiday region. This places the district in a wider context and complements the more local focus on Oberstadt.

Two museums offer further cultural highlights in the district. The Hennebergisches Museum Kloster VeĂźra is a 6-hectare open-air museum. Its four themed areas explore the history of the monastery, half-timbered architecture and everyday life in the Henneberg region, as well as agricultural technology and sustainability. The German Castle Museum at Veste Heldburg presents the history and culture of castles in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its permanent exhibition is laid out as a tour through the entire castle: visitors learn how castle architecture changed from one era to the next and discover Veste Heldburg.

Landscape and regional themes

At the Rodachaue heathland, the roof of the observation shelter offers panoramic views across the meadows of the Rodachaue. Konik horses and Heck cattle contribute to the development of a natural landscape there. The approximately 7 km-long mill hiking trail in the municipality of Straufhain explores a different theme: nine grain and sawmills once operated in the area, and information boards at their former sites provide details about the mills.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by considering your travel interests: would you like to focus on village history, festivals and trails around Oberstadt, or also explore the distinct cultural and landscape themes of the Hildburghausen district? This helps distinguish the local focus on Oberstadt from the wider regional themes.
