In Suhl, cultural history, astronomy and hiking are distinct themes to choose from for a stay. The weapons and vehicle museums explore different chapters of local production; the planetarium and observatory offer different ways of looking at the sky. Suhl is also close to the Rennsteig. When planning, it helps to decide whether museum visits, stargazing or time outdoors will be the main focus.
Museums: Suhl’s craftsmanship and vehicle history
The Suhl Weapons Museum presents nearly 600 years of Suhl’s small-arms manufacturing tradition across three floors. A dedicated section offers insights into Suhl porcelain production, which played an important role between 1861 and 1930. The museum brings together two distinct aspects of local manufacturing history: the long tradition of small-arms production and porcelain manufacturing during a clearly defined historical period.
The Suhl Vehicle Museum offers another perspective. Its 1,100 m² exhibition space features around 220 exhibits from all areas of vehicle manufacturing. These include original Simson motorcycles on which European and world champions won their titles, as well as the legendary Greifzu racing car. The two museums therefore offer a contrast between Suhl’s small-arms and porcelain traditions on the one hand, and vehicle manufacturing and motor racing on the other. If you would like to combine cultural history with technology, these are two clearly distinct themes.
Planetarium, observatory and puppet theatre
Suhl offers two different ways to explore the sky. The planetarium seats up to 56 visitors beneath an 8-metre dome. Using the Zeiss “Skymaster” small planetarium, it projects around 6,000 fixed stars, as well as the movements of the Sun, Moon and planets. At the observatory, by contrast, you can make observations with expert guidance, using a 40 cm Cassegrain reflector telescope and an 11 cm refractor. The choice is between a projected night sky and guided telescope viewing.

Hiking trails and proximity to the Rennsteig
Suhl is close to the Rennsteig. The Herbert Roth Hiking Trail is a panoramic route around Suhl, the hometown of Herbert Roth. Another hiking route in Suhl is the Suhl Planet Trail. For planning a hike, these offer two different options: a trail explicitly described as a panoramic route around the town, and another named hiking route.
Keep visitor conditions in mind when planning
The Suhl International Shooting Centre offers visits, guided tours and shooting sessions by prior arrangement. If you would like to include it in your itinerary, arrange your preferred date in advance. It is also a good idea to coordinate a visit to the puppet theatre with your stay by checking performance dates.
The Ottilienbad is currently closed for renovations; reopening is scheduled for 2027. If a swimming visit is important to your trip, take this restriction into account and check for updates before planning. The “Schwarzer Crux” visitor mine in Suhl-Vesser is also currently closed. Information about when it will reopen to visitors is expected to follow, so only include a visit once current information is available.
