Cemetery Church: Simple Exterior, Late Renaissance Interior
The cemetery church in Römhild combines a simple exterior with an interior in the style of the restrained Late Renaissance. It was built from 1708 to 1712 on the orders of Duke Heinrich. Master builder Christian Richter used mainly materials from the demolished pleasure palace “Merzelbach”. Inside, an altarpiece painted by court painter Dupree shows Duke Heinrich and his wife kneeling before the Crucified Christ. There are also wooden memorial plaques and inscribed sandstone and cast-metal grave slabs.
Glücksburg Castle: Museum and Collections in the City Center
The Glücksburg Castle Museum in the city center presents the history of the castle and the town, as well as outstanding personalities, in its permanent exhibition. The special collection of the Greek Mavrogordato family includes objects from Roman and Greek antiquity, as well as artist and character dolls from the first half of the 20th century. The Hönn Collection focuses on tools from the region’s rural crafts and agriculture, and particularly illustrates the history of pottery in Römhild. Another exhibition features dollhouses, doll prams, toy shops and wooden toys from great-grandmother’s time. The same museum thus brings together the history of the town and castle, ancient objects, toys and regional craft history.
Plan Opening Hours and Events
The museum’s seasonal schedule is important when planning a visit: From April 1 to October 31, the museum is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; the last admission is at 3:30 p.m. On Sundays, it is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m. It is closed on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. From November 1 to March 31, visits are possible by appointment only. Check the opening hours with the museum before your visit, as they may change.
The museum’s annual program includes concerts, readings, lectures, film events, special exhibitions and educational activities; individual events vary. The Thuringian Römhild Ceramics Market takes place every year on the third weekend in August in the courtyards of Glücksburg Castle. If you would like to plan your stay around the market, check the exact date for the relevant year.
Outdoor Pool and Trails Nearby
The Römhild outdoor pool is about 2 km from Römhild and opened in 1936. It can be reached on foot or by bicycle via numerous cycling and hiking trails. A visit can be combined with hikes to the Großer and Kleiner Gleichberg, Dingsleben or Gleichamberg, or with cycling tours through the Grabfeld, the Gleichberge and the Heldburger Unterland. Check the availability of the trails and connections locally before making firm plans for your outing.
In the Hildburghausen District: Further Perspectives
The Hildburghausen district is an important part of the Thuringian Forest recreation region. It includes an unbroken woodland area in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park; the district is also shaped, among other things, by the Vessertal Biosphere Reserve. The region also offers distinct cultural attractions: The Hennebergisches Museum Kloster Veßra is a six-hectare open-air museum. Its four themed areas cover monastic history, half-timbered architecture and everyday life in the Henneberg region, as well as agricultural technology and sustainability. The German Castle Museum at Veste Heldburg presents the history and culture of castles in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its permanent exhibition is arranged as a tour through the entire fortress and explores how castle construction changed from one era to the next.
