Schleusegrund can be described by two specific features: its location on the Rennsteig and the terraced pool in Schönbrunn. The area lies on the southwestern slope of the Rennsteig, in side valleys at elevations of 450 to 800 meters. Schleusegrund is one of the most appealing recreational areas in the UNESCO Thuringian Forest Biosphere Reserve. The landscape and swimming facilities offer different points of reference when choosing where to stay: you can first weigh whether elevation or a specific leisure activity matters more to you.

Schönbrunn: Orientation and swimming facilities

The certified Schleusegrund Tourist Information Office is located in Schönbrunn. Schönbrunn Terraced Pool has a sports pool, a non-swimmer area with a stainless-steel slide, and an area for small children. If the pool is important to your plans, check current visiting options in advance.

In the district of Hildburghausen: Nature and culture

The broader destination of the district of Hildburghausen adds another, regional dimension. The district includes an extensive, contiguous woodland in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park; it is also shaped, among other things, by the Vessertal Biosphere Reserve. In the Rodachaue pasture landscape, the roof of the observation platform offers panoramic views over the meadows of the Rodachaue. Konik horses and Heck cattle contribute to the development of a natural landscape there.

The Hennebergisches Museum Kloster Veßra is a 6-hectare open-air museum with four themed areas: the history of the monastery, half-timbered architecture and everyday life in the Henneberg region, as well as agricultural technology and sustainability. The German Castle Museum at Veste Heldburg focuses on a different subject: it presents the history and culture of castles in Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its permanent exhibition is laid out as a tour through the entire fortress. Visitors learn how castle construction changed from one era to the next and discover Veste Heldburg. In this way, an open-air museum with four themed areas and a castle exhibition arranged as a tour offer options for different cultural interests. The Rodachtal Two-Country Museum opened in November 2009 and takes visitors on a journey through the 20th century in a border region, the Rodachtal. The surviving palace garden in Hildburghausen was laid out as a Baroque garden around 1700 and converted into a landscape park around 1780; both are further examples of the district’s historical heritage.

The district also offers a range of activities. Within the district, the Werra Valley Cycle Route runs through the Werra floodplains and is particularly popular for cycling trips downstream. The Werra Valley is also suitable for hiking; downstream from Themar, it is also possible to travel by water. These examples differ in terms of landscape and mode of travel, and are regional features of the district of Hildburghausen.

This way, your choice of location remains guided by your interests, without automatically combining individual places into a set itinerary.
