Uder lies on the Leine and is surrounded by mountains. The town brings together traces of church and school history, extensive green spaces and a cycling rest stop in Leine Park. Historical themes are therefore found alongside opportunities for outdoor activities at named locations. In 1961, Uder was recognised as a holiday resort thanks to its favourable location and idyllic townscape.
Church, School and Local History
Today’s St. James’s Church stands almost on the same site as an early church that was already there around 1100. Its historic furnishings include a winged altar and high altar, a baptismal font and carved pew ends. Another notable feature of the church is a carved equestrian statue of Saint George, about 40 centimetres tall; its origins are uncertain. The combination of an early church site and a variety of furnishings makes the church a tangible point of reference for Uder’s history.
The School Museum is located in Uder Secondary School, Schulstraße 4, 37318 Uder. It features an old classroom, historical furnishings and displays about the school history of the Eichsfeld region. The Grotto of Our Lady is another attraction in Uder. For a culture-focused itinerary, the church’s history, the School Museum and another named site are all options.
Green Spaces and Paths
Leine Park, right in Uder, has a cycling rest stop where cyclists can take a break. Uder also has extensive green spaces offering opportunities for play and sport. The municipal swimming pool is in Siedlung, 37318 Uder. If you are planning a visit, check in advance what visiting options are currently available.
South of Uder, nearby, lies Lengenberg, with a yew nature trail. A historic Way of St. James once passed through Uder. Uder’s scouts are working to have it marked and publicised again. The path’s history spans two periods: a former route through the town and present-day local efforts.
The wider Eichsfeld destination
Those who also explore the wider Eichsfeld destination will find other distinct themes there. Bodenstein Castle was first mentioned in official records in 1098 and stands on a spur of the Ohm Mountains. Guided tours about the history of the castle’s former lords, the von Wintzingerode family, are regularly offered; visitors can also see the small chapel with its baptismal angel.
The Eichsfeld Museum, housed in Heilbad Heiligenstadt’s Baroque Jesuit college, devotes three floors to the region’s history, culture, religious life and folklore. In Dingelstädt, the hobby-horse ride around St. Mary’s Church takes place every year on Easter Monday. Preschool children ride wooden hobby horses decorated with bells and colourful ribbons. These examples offer contrasting perspectives: castle and museum history alongside a local tradition held on a set date each year.
