Berlingerode lies in a valley at the foot of the Rotenberg. The town’s history can be traced through dated records and St. Stephen’s Church. In the wider travel destination of the Eichsfeld, the range of topics extends beyond this to include castles, a museum, hiking trails and a cycling route. This allows you to distinguish between a local focus on history and a broader regional focus for your trip.

Berlingerode and its history

Berlingerode was first mentioned in 1266 in the chronicle of the lords of Westernhagen Castle. Another historical trace lies close to the town: Westernhagen Castle in the Rangental valley is southeast of Berlingerode and was destroyed in 1525 during the German Peasants’ War. Nothing of the so-called Old Castle is visible today. The first written mention and the site of the destroyed castle are distinct points of reference for the history of the town and its surroundings.

St. Stephen’s Church adds a precisely dated building history to the town’s story. Berlingerode’s predecessor church was built in 1685 and demolished in 1895 because it had fallen into disrepair. St. Stephen’s Church was completed in 1989 and consecrated that same year by Auxiliary Bishop Gockel of Paderborn. The historical dates therefore span the first chronicle entry and an ecclesiastical event in the late 20th century.

Cultural attractions in the Eichsfeld

In the Eichsfeld, Bodenstein Castle and the Eichsfeld Museum offer different ways to explore regional history. Bodenstein Castle was first documented in 1098 and stands on a spur of the Ohm Mountains. Regular guided tours there cover the history of the former lords of Wintzingerode; visitors can also visit the small chapel with its baptismal angel. Check the current tour schedule for your travel dates.

Housed in the Baroque Jesuit college in Heilbad Heiligenstadt, the Eichsfeld Museum covers the Eichsfeld’s history, culture, religious life and folklore across three floors. While the guided tours at Bodenstein Castle focus on the former castle lords, the museum takes a broader look at the region. Which aspect interests you more can help determine the cultural focus of your trip.

Another regional tradition takes place every year on Easter Monday in Dingelstädt: hobby-horse riding around St. Mary’s Church. Preschool children ride wooden horses decorated with bells and colorful ribbons. This custom offers a different experience alongside the castles and museum, and is tied to a specific holiday.

Hiking, cycling and views

For outdoor activities in the Eichsfeld, the DĂĽn and Iberg hills around Heilbad Heiligenstadt offer good conditions for extended hikes on certified TOP hiking trails. Another option is the Leine-Heide Cycle Route, which starts in Leinefelde and runs all the way to Hamburg. These two options can help you choose your focus: hiking along the heights or a cycling route with Hamburg as its destination.

The viewpoints also differ in location and viewing conditions. Scharfenstein Castle has a viewing terrace and a 20-meter-high tower completed in 2016. From there, the panoramic view stretches across the upper Leine valley, the Eichsfeld Basin, the Ohm Mountains and the eastern Dün; on a clear day, the Harz Mountains are also visible. The accessible west tower of Hanstein Castle’s ruins offers a far-reaching view across the Eichsfeld and surrounding forests in clear weather. When visibility is especially good, the panorama extends as far as the Brocken. If views are important to your plans, take the stated viewing conditions into account.
