In the valley of the Leine and Geislede rivers, surrounded by the wooded heights of the Iberg and DĂĽn, Heilbad Heiligenstadt combines a historic townscape with museums and a variety of ways to enjoy the outdoors. When planning your visit, you can focus on culture and outdoor activities: options range from exhibitions on local and regional history to a shorter sculpture trail and a challenging hike around the town.

Gothic churches, half-timbered houses and museums

Three notable Gothic churches, Baroque secular buildings and half-timbered houses shape the historic townscape. The former Jesuit college has a special place among them: the Baroque building dates from 1740 and houses the Eichsfeld Museum, which opened there on 1 April 1932. Spread over three floors, its exhibitions explore the history, culture, religious life and folklore of the Eichsfeld region. The museum thus offers a focus on regional history as part of a visit to the town.

The Theodor Storm Literature Museum takes a different approach. Its permanent exhibition presents Storm’s life and creative work from 1856 to 1864, when he worked as a district judge in Heiligenstadt. The collection includes works by and about the writer, including first editions of his poems and novellas. Those interested in history can choose between a broad perspective on the Eichsfeld region and a literary-biographical theme.

Guided tours of the town and the Eichsfeld region are available. If you would like to explore the town or region on a guided tour, check availability before booking.

Hiking and trails through the town

The Heilbad Heiligenstadt Panorama Trail is a circular route of just under 18 kilometres around the town. It is suited to a varied, challenging hike and offers wide views across the spa town and the Eichsfeld region. Viewpoints such as “Westblick” and “Paradiesblick” look out over the rooftops of Heiligenstadt, into the Leine valley and far across the region. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.

For a shorter route, try the 3.5-kilometre, largely barrier-free Sculpture Trail. It runs through Heilbad Heiligenstadt, past striking wooden sculptures, notable buildings and squares. Much of the route passes through Heinrich Heine Spa Park. Along with the Heiligenstadt municipal forest, the park is the town’s largest continuous green space. The two routes offer different experiences: the Sculpture Trail focuses on art and the townscape, while the Panorama Trail offers a longer hike and scenic views.

More activities and seasonal events

The Vitalpark offers a bathing complex with 1,000 square metres of water for relaxing, exercising and swimming, as well as a sauna area. Alongside the trails, it provides another option for activity and relaxation.

The Brothers Grimm Fairy-Tale Park covers 2,600 square metres. Its attractions include fairy-tale characters, a fairy-tale castle, a foot-wading pool, a sandbox and play equipment. In summer, fairy tales are told in the castle on four Sundays. The Fairy-Tale Park Festival is held on the first Sunday in July. Check the dates for your year of travel before planning a visit.

The Festival of the Heiligenstadt Carrot Kings is another seasonal occasion: this annual town festival takes place in September. Check the exact dates when planning your trip.
