Großbodungen, a locality within Am Ohmberg, offers opportunities to explore cultural history and spend time outdoors. There is one important condition to bear in mind when planning: visits to the museum at Großbodungen Castle are possible by prior arrangement only. The trails and viewpoints offer independent highlights for your time in the area.
Museum and Market History in Großbodungen
The museum at Großbodungen Castle displays fossils, minerals and medieval tools. Castle owner Roman Wolf has been assembling the collection since childhood. Natural finds and historical artifacts are presented side by side. If you plan to visit the museum, check the current booking arrangements with the operator in advance.
The market’s history also spans two periods. Großbodungen was granted market rights in 1664; historically, three general and livestock markets were held there each year. Since the period of German reunification, regular merchandise markets have been held with traders from all over Thuringia. Check the current dates before your trip if you plan to visit a market.
Bode Valley, Forests and Circular Hiking Trails
Großbodungen lies in the Bode Valley. Extensive mixed forests lie in the northern part of the municipal area, at elevations of between 250 and 400 metres above sea level. The valley and the northern forest areas therefore offer different landscape features; the elevation figures refer to the mixed forests.
Four circular hiking trails run through the Großbodungen municipal area and connect to long-distance and regional hiking trails. On Circular Hiking Trail 1, the “Carl Duval Memorial Trail,” the route passes Lindsberg, from where you can look out over Großbodungen. From the Hasenburg plateau, by contrast, the view takes in the surrounding villages and the Harz Mountains. The viewpoints therefore offer different panoramas. Check the current route before setting out on a hike.
In the wider Eichsfeld travel destination
The wider Eichsfeld travel destination offers further cultural and natural attractions. Bodenstein Castle was first mentioned in official records in 1098 and stands on a spur of the Ohm Mountains. Regular guided tours at the castle explore the history of its former lords, the von Wintzingerode family; it is also possible to visit the small chapel with its baptismal angel. Check current tour dates in advance.
The Eichsfeld Museum, housed in Heilbad Heiligenstadt’s Baroque Jesuit college, provides information across three floors about the history, culture, religious life and folklore of the Eichsfeld region. The Dün and Iberg mountains around Heilbad Heiligenstadt offer excellent conditions for long hikes on certified TOP hiking trails. Local cuisine is also part of the region’s appeal: air-dried sausage is considered an Eichsfeld specialty and is known beyond the region’s borders. In the wider Eichsfeld travel destination, Duderstadt’s completely preserved medieval ramparts invite you to stroll beneath old lime and chestnut trees.
