Klein Rönnau offers two different starting points for a stay: the historic watermill and a walk by Lake Ihlsee. The village thus combines the history of milling with a landscape of beech forest and Trave meadows. When planning a trip, visitors can choose between two specific interests: the preserved milling technology or the family-friendly circular walk outdoors. Both are linked to a named location and a clearly defined activity.

The watermill and its history

The watermill was built in 1649. The protected mill complex preserves parts of the original milling technology from that year. During a demonstration, visitors can see the milling process from grain to flour. Group visits are possible by prior arrangement, so please arrange group visits in advance. This brings two different aspects of the mill into focus: its historic machinery and the process from grain to flour.

On foot by Lake Ihlsee

The 5.07-kilometre Ihlsee Circular Trail combines beech forest and Trave meadows with family-friendly hiking. A nature park circular trail approaches Klein Rönnau from Lake Ihlsee via a footpath and cycle path, reaching the old watermill on Mühlenweg. From there, the route passes the restored mill courtyard, a pond and a protected landscape waterbody. Trail conditions and signage may change; check current conditions before setting out.

The Trave meadows along the route are a habitat for numerous insects and birds. These include banded demoiselles, grasshopper warblers, kingfishers and middle spotted woodpeckers. These species are part of the route’s natural environment, but sightings are not guaranteed. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish between a habitat and actually spotting wildlife: the circular trail offers opportunities to connect with nature, but there is no guarantee of encountering any particular species.

In the wider Segeberg travel destination

The wider Segeberg travel destination offers a broader natural setting. The district of Segeberg brings together dense forests, clear lakes, vibrant hedgerows and lush meadows. Its hiking trails and paths range from longer tours to short walks; guided hikes and nature tours provide insights into local wildlife and plant life. Segeberg Forest covers 40 square kilometres and offers a wooded setting for nature-focused outings. In the northeast of the district, the hilly landscape of Holstein Switzerland Nature Park also extends into the district.

Culture and crafts in Segeberg

The wider Segeberg travel destination also offers cultural and historical attractions with different areas of focus. The Alt-Segeberger Bürgerhaus Museum presents the architectural and residential history of the house, which dates back to 1541, as well as an exhibition on Segeberg’s 800-year development. The C. & F. Blunck Wool Spinning Mill offers insight into wool processing: guided tours trace and demonstrate the entire wool-processing process in a historic mill complex. Check the availability of tours in advance. The region’s cultural heritage thus encompasses both the history of houses and towns and traditional crafts.
