Bühnsdorf can be explored through two themes: early local history and a rural landscape. An early record of the place name, a later connection to a field system and watermill, and a memorial stone and local chronicle offer several starting points for exploring local history. The wider Segeberg destination also offers independent nature, cultural and seasonal activities to choose from.

Local History and Landscape in Bühnsdorf

The recorded local history dates back to 1142, when the settlement was listed as “Buenestorpe.” The year 1359 marks a connection between the settlement, a field system and a watermill associated with Reinfeld Monastery. The two dates represent different aspects: first, an early form of the name, and later, the field system and mill in connection with the monastery. A memorial stone was erected for the 850th anniversary of the village, commemorating its long history; a local chronicle also documents it. Thus, the early record of the name, historical land use and local commemoration offer different ways to explore the village’s history.

As of December 2025, the landscape in the planning area includes agricultural land and grassland, small still-water bodies, protected hedgerows and field margins, as well as a designated cycling and hiking trail. Land use, woody vegetation and bodies of water therefore shape the described landscape features; the trail adds cycling and hiking to the mix. While the village’s history is explored through dates and memorials, the focus here is on land and landscape features.

Nature and Wildlife in the Wider Segeberg Destination

The Segeberger Forest covers 40 square kilometres and offers a wooded setting for nature-based outings. Hiking trails and paths in the Segeberg district are suitable for both longer hikes and short walks. Guided hikes and nature tours offer insights into local wildlife and plant life. The regional offering therefore ranges from routes of varying lengths to guided introductions to nature topics.

Eekholt Wildlife Park is located on the northern edge of the Segeberger Forest between Bad Bramstedt and Bad Segeberg, surrounded by the landscape of the Osterau. More than 700 animals from 100 species can be observed across its 67 hectares. As animal and species numbers may change, check the latest information before your visit.

Bats are another nature-related theme: more than 30,000 use the Kalkberg Cave in Bad Segeberg as a winter roost. Noctalis explores the world of bats and their habitat interactively through play and learning stations. The ecological winter roost and the interactive exhibition thus offer different ways to explore the topic.

Culture and Seasonal Activities in Segeberg

The Alt-Segeberger Bürgerhaus Museum presents the building and residents’ history of the house, dating from 1541, as well as an exhibition on Segeberg’s 800-year development. St. Mary’s Church in Bad Segeberg was built from fired clay bricks in 1156. It was the first brick church of its kind north of the Elbe and the first basilica with a vaulted ceiling. Another cultural experience is the Karl May Games, held every summer at the open-air theatre at the foot of Bad Segeberg’s Kalkberg. The theatre can seat up to 7,700 spectators per performance. Check the dates for the relevant year if you plan to attend.

One seasonal highlight in the wider Segeberg destination is Gut Stockseehof: sweet cherries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries are sold directly through the estate and at the farmers’ market, along with other fresh regional produce. Events include garden shows, fruit harvests, a music festival, workshops and a Christmas market. For seasonal products and events, it is advisable to check current availability or the programme in advance.
