Moorland on the Outskirts

Damendorf lies in the terminal moraine landscape of the HĂĽttener Berge. The local landscape includes wooded areas with ancient beech and oak trees, as well as four moors. Seemoor, which covers around 23 hectares, lies east of the village. Together, these features paint a picture of Damendorf in which the moorland and village setting shape your stay.

Part of Seemoor is accessible to walkers via a circular trail. The trail leads through parts of the moor and makes this landscape a tangible part of a stay here. If you are considering Damendorf as a place to stay, you can ask yourself whether the local moorland and village life suit the focus you want for your trip.

Village Character and Archaeological Traces

The village’s architectural development also contributes to its character: some of its traditional character has been restored through the renovation of older buildings, work on thatched roofs and cobblestones on Meiereistraße. These examples highlight different features, from individual buildings and roofs to the streetscape. If you are interested in the design of a village, you will find these visible traces of its development alongside the landscape.

Damendorf is also associated with the discovery of several bog bodies. They are on display at the Gottorf State Museum in Schleswig. This adds an archaeological connection to the area’s natural and architectural history. If you would like to see the finds at the museum, check current visiting arrangements before your visit.

Within the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination

The wider region offers additional landscape highlights within the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district. The district has 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline and is also home to four nature parks. These consist largely of nature and landscape conservation areas and provide habitats for diverse flora and fauna. Thus, within the broader destination, Damendorf’s moors sit alongside other natural and coastal landscapes as distinct themes to consider when planning a trip.

A different perspective on the landscape can be enjoyed from the 98-metre-high Aschberg: on a clear day, the panoramic view reaches as far as the Kiel Canal, Eckernförde Bay and the state capital, Kiel. The Westensee-Obere Eider Nature Park is characterised by numerous clusters of lakes in the Schleswig-Holstein Uplands. It includes Westensee, which covers around 7 km² and is a popular destination for excursions. The views and lake landscapes therefore complement the moorland as distinct nature experiences within the wider destination.

There are also different options for choosing routes at regional level: the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district has a signposted cycling network stretching 1,000 kilometres. The 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail runs through the district’s four nature parks. The European long-distance trail E1 is marked throughout with a white St Andrew’s cross and passes through the Hüttener Berge, Brekendorfer Wald and over the Aschberg. This makes it possible to distinguish a local walk at Seemoor from the longer hiking and cycling routes in the wider destination.
