Winnemark can be explored via specific trails: The 14.76-kilometre circular hike “Thatched-Roof Idyl and Estate Landscapes around Winnemark” is classified as moderate. It leads through Karlsburger Holz, across open stretches of fields with views of typical thatched roofs, and along the banks of the Schlei on the way back.

The circular hike from Winnemark

The hike starts and ends at DorfstraĂźe 3. The route leads through Karlsburger Holz and also includes open stretches of fields. After the section near Sieseby, the return route to Winnemark follows the banks of the Schlei exclusively. Forest, open countryside and the waterside path are thus among the defining parts of the loop. The difficulty level is moderate. The paths are easy to walk, but a good basic level of fitness is required. Check the surface conditions before setting out.

Karlsburger Holz: Forest and protected area

Karlsburger Holz, through which the Winnemark hiking route runs, is considered the largest wooded area on the Schwansen Peninsula. The natural deciduous forest lies on gently undulating glacial moraine. Beech forest with woodruff is predominant, while smaller areas consist of oak-hornbeam forest. The Karlsburger Holz Special Area of Conservation covers 186 hectares. Those interested in forest composition will find a specific distinction here: beech forest characterises most of the area, while oak-hornbeam forest occurs in smaller areas.

The shorter option via Sieseby

Those who do not want to walk the full distance can skip the optional detour to Sieseby. This shortens the Winnemark circular hike by about four kilometres. The detour includes a rest area with two wooden benches right by the Schlei. This makes it possible to base the decision not only on the route length but also on this specific place to rest.

Cycle routes and a view across the Schlei

There are also different route descriptions for cyclists. The “Siesebyer Schleichwege” reach Winnemark via field paths from Karlsburger Holz. For a view across the Schlei, this route recommends a detour to the Netzausleger, a large hammock-like structure. The “SchleiUferTörn” follows a gravel road between Sieseby and Winnemark. So, if you compare the two routes based on the stated surfaces, you will find different descriptions: field paths on the Siesebyer Schleichwege and a gravel road on the SchleiUferTörn section.

Karlsburg Manor House and Schlei nature

Karlsburg Manor House, dating from 1721, is considered a building of significant cultural and historical value. A protected lime-tree avenue, planted in 1737, leads to the house and adds a historic touch to the estate landscape around Winnemark. The manor house therefore dates from an earlier period than the avenue.

In the wider Schlei region, the quiet waters provide breeding, resting and wintering grounds for numerous endangered bird species. The return route along the banks of the Schlei gives this natural environment a direct connection to the route planning.
