Strande is located on the Dänischer Wohld peninsula, right on Kiel’s outer fjord. Marked walking and cycling routes, protected natural areas at Fuhlensee and an artistic connection to Max Pechstein offer visitors a range of ways to explore the area during their stay.

Routes around Strande

The promenade, around six kilometres long, runs from Schilksee to Bülk Lighthouse. There are also five colour-coded walking routes around Strande, ranging from 3.5 to 11 kilometres. The promenade’s length therefore falls within the range of the walking routes. The marked trails offer shorter and longer options, making it easy to choose a route based on the desired distance.

Cycling routes from Strande include the Baltic Sea Cycle Route and themed routes through Dänischer Wohld. In addition to walking routes, these named cycling options can also be taken into account when planning a stay.

Fuhlensee and the coastal landscape

Fuhlensee has been a protected nature reserve since 1993. The Verlobungsweg, a woodland path, lies at the northern end of the lake. The FFH area extends eastwards to Strande. Its waters are an internationally important resting area for waterbirds and coastal birds and have European bird protection status. At Fuhlensee, a specific woodland path and the wider regional importance of the waters for resting birds offer two distinct ways to experience nature.

The viewing platform at Bülk Lighthouse is 22 metres high and offers views of the Baltic Sea, the steep coast and Dänischer Wohld. The lighthouse is also the endpoint of the approximately six-kilometre promenade from Schilksee. This route therefore combines a specific distance with a destination from which visitors can take in several aspects of the landscape.

Art in Strande

Max Pechstein made preparatory drawings for his painting “Am Strand” in Strande. The work is part of the permanent exhibition of Expressionist artists at the Kunsthalle Kiel. This connection to art history is therefore tied to a specific place and a named painting.

Strande within the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination

The wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination offers a broader perspective. The district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde has 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline and a signposted cycling network spanning 1,000 kilometres; it is also home to four nature parks. The 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail runs through all four parks. The local walking routes around Strande range from 3.5 to 11 kilometres, making them quite different in scale from this regional route.

The 98-metre-high Aschberg is also part of the landscape in the wider destination. In fine weather, the panoramic view from there extends to the Kiel Canal, Eckernförde Bay and the state capital, Kiel. Eckernförde has a four-kilometre-long white sandy beach. In the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination, around 70 kilometres, or two-thirds, of the Kiel Canal runs through the district.
