Schönberger Strand combines a distinctive railway history with a fine sandy Baltic Sea beach. When planning your visit, it helps to distinguish between the two: the museum station is centered on the narrow-gauge railway, the historic building and its vehicles, while the beach, pier and other coastal attractions shape the experience by the water. This lets you choose the focus of your stay: culture, time at the beach or activities by the sea.

Railway History at the Museum Station

The museum railway between Schönberger Strand and Schönberg (Holstein) is an extension, opened on 18 June 1914, of the Kiel–Schönberg narrow-gauge railway, which had been in operation since 1897. The museum station building was also constructed in 1914, based on a design by architect Fr. Theede. Its interior has largely been preserved in its original form; the ticket hall, in particular, with its ticket counter, brings the building’s historic purpose to life. The museum railway collection includes more than 30 tram vehicles from northern Germany. The dates distinguish the longer-established narrow-gauge railway from its later extension and the station’s construction history.

Vehicles, Rides and Hands-on Experiment Stations

At the museum station, visitors can see historic vehicles, the buildings and all the exhibits displayed outdoors. Check current visiting arrangements before your visit. The museum tram at the station runs on its own tracks and carries passengers; check seasonal departure times in advance if you would like to take a ride. Another attraction at the museum station is Nawimenta, with eleven science experiment stations for children aged five and over. There are several different ways to enjoy the site: viewing historic vehicles and buildings, taking a ride on the museum tram or exploring the experiment stations for the specified age group.

Fine Sandy Beach and Activities by the Water

The fine sandy beach section in the Schönberger Strand district, which is subject to a visitor’s tax, is freely accessible at any time. You can rent beach chairs on the beach and on the dike from May to September from the Tourist Service of the Baltic Sea resort of Schönberg. There is also a water sports school by the water and the 260-metre-long Schönberger Pier. Excursion boats around the Kiel Lighthouse depart from the pier. A bathing island with a slide lies between groynes 37 and 38. When planning a beach day, it is helpful to distinguish between the two: the beach is accessible at any time, while beach chair rentals are available from May to September.

Cycling Along the Coast

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route is another way to experience this stretch of coastline. It runs from Kalifornien through Brasilien to Schönberger Strand, directly along the beach between the dunes and the dike. If you plan to cycle this section, check local trail conditions in advance. The different activities can be distinguished by what you want to do: the museum tram runs on its own tracks, excursion boats depart from the pier, and the cycle route follows the beach.
