Wisch was first mentioned in 1216 and is one of the oldest villages in the Probstei region. A 4.5-meter-high dike protects Wisch and its land from flooding; country lanes wind through hedgerows and meadows to the beach. The village center, paths, and beach each offer a different focus for your stay.
Village Center and Historic Traces
The Peace Oak forms the center of the village. A circular route runs along Redder, Moor, and Dorfstraße, providing a clear point of reference for the village center. Historic settlement patterns are visible in the streetscape and in preserved historic buildings and farmsteads. If you are interested in the village’s history, you can consider the course of the streets alongside these architectural traces: the historic layout is evident not only in individual buildings, but also in the design of the village.
Country Lanes, Cycling Network, and Getting Around
Outside the village center, country lanes wind through varied hedgerow and meadow landscapes to the beach. They can be explored on foot, by bike, or on horseback. Wisch also has direct access to the Probstei hiking and cycling network. SprottenFlotte bike-share stations are located at the corner of Postweg and Kaiserkoppel and at the Heidkate parking lot. When planning your trips, you can distinguish between the circular route described in the village, the country lanes, and the wider network. The country lanes offer different ways to get around, so you are not limited to just one mode of transport.
Heidkate: Beach and Water Sports
Heidkate has a 3.7-kilometer-long, fine-sand natural beach that is free of beach fees. As fee regulations may change in the future, it is advisable to check the latest information before your trip. The parking lot is located directly behind the dike and can be reached via the B502 and K33 roads. The Heidkate Lighthouse serves as a landmark and a point of reference for the beach. This gives you both the parking lot and a prominent landmark to help you find your way around.
Beach activities are also clearly divided into designated areas: the dog beach extends across three groynes, and two sections are set aside for kite flying. Heidkate also has a large beach for surfers with a surf school. Activities on offer include surfing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddling, and surf fishing. When choosing the right part of the beach, it is therefore worth considering what you plan to do and observing the designated areas.
Winter and Regional Dining
In winter, children from the surrounding area use Jägersberg as a tobogganing hill. This is a seasonal addition to the paths and beach activities. Wisch’s tourist area also has a campsite.
For regional shopping and dining, it is also worth exploring the wider Probstei region. There you will find weekly markets, farms, country inns, farm cafés, and fish smokehouses. You can buy fresh ingredients at weekly markets and directly from farms. This lets you complement your stay in Wisch with offerings from the wider region, while keeping village routes and regional options distinct.
