Stein combines a fine sandy beach with shallow water, coastal paths and opportunities for windsurfing. There are also distinctive themes to explore away from the water: the Stone Trail runs through the village, while the Coastal Culture Trail focuses on life on the Baltic Sea. You can tailor your stay to suit the beach, water sports or coastal culture.

Beach and coast in Stein

Stein’s beach has fine sand and a gentle slope. Stein Bay also has a wide shallow-water zone with numerous sandbanks, as well as dunes and a belt of reeds. These features shape the village’s coastal character and make the beach and water a central part of a stay here.

You can walk along the long sandy beach below the steep coast. The cliffs between Stein and Laboe rise up to 70 metres. The marked dog beach is in Stein, west of Tatort Hawaii, by the cliffs; please observe the local rules for beach access.

The beach in Stein is accessible to people with limited mobility. An accessible toilet is located behind Gut Salzig, near the playground and Tatort Hawaii. These details can be helpful when finding your way around.

Water sports and trails

You can learn to windsurf in the shallow bay. By contrast, the Stein pier extends into deeper water. This offers two different ways to enjoy the water: learning to windsurf in the shallow bay and visiting the pier, which reaches into deeper water. If water sports are part of your stay, these local features offer different options.

The Stone Trail runs through Stein and features twelve boulders typical of northern Germany. The Coastal Culture Trail offers another perspective on the area: seven digital information boards along the coast in Stein and Wendtorf explain life on the Baltic Sea. The two trails have different focuses—one highlights the boulders, while the other explores life on the coast.

The wider Plön destination offers maritime activities beyond Stein. Along the Baltic coast of the district, you can go swimming, sailing, surfing and diving, as well as take boat excursions, offshore sailing trips and cutter cruises, or try surf fishing. These activities are available along the Baltic coast of Plön district.
