A mill with construction phases spanning the 19th and 20th centuries, a hike with views across Bautzen, and a long-distance cycling route through the municipality give Großpostwitz/O.L. a distinct framework for exploration. The Great Drohmberg Loop with the Cosul Valley offers a clearly described hiking option; cyclists can choose between a route through the municipality and the Upper Lusatian Railway Cycle Path. These different options help you weigh up visits to local sights, exercise and excursions when planning your trip.

Mill, church and legend

The historic Schnabel Art Mill complex on the Spree combines several construction phases. The main building dates from 1823 and has a mansard roof and listed door surrounds. There is also a 1930 storage building. Much of the original roof structure, stairs and intermediate floors has been preserved; the mill later received a turbine extension. The contrast between the main building, the storage building and the later technical extension makes the different construction phases of the same complex easy to understand.

The Evangelical Church at Hauptstraße 1 is another sight in Großpostwitz. If you are planning to visit the interior, check access in advance. The legend of the seven buried Wendish kings is also part of the local cultural heritage: the Kings’ Path on Drohmberg links seven Wendish kings to a legend told in Sorbian and German. Check the current status of the installation before your visit.

Hiking with views across Bautzen

The Great Drohmberg Loop with the Cosul Valley starts at the car park in the centre of Großpostwitz. It is 8 kilometres long; walking time is around 2 hours and 20 minutes, with 280 metres of ascent and descent. The Panorama Trail section opens up far-reaching views across the Upper Lusatian Highlands. Elsewhere, the loop offers sweeping views over Bautzen; other sections follow a stream through a spruce forest. The route thus alternates between distance, elevation and different landscapes. Check current route information before setting out.

Cycling routes and fishing spots

A long-distance cycling route runs through the entire municipality of Großpostwitz. The Upper Lusatian Railway Cycle Path follows an old railway line through the Cunewalde Valley and forms part of a regional main route between the Spree Cycle Path and the Saxon Cities Route. The described section runs from Großpostwitz/Eulowitz through Cunewalde to Löbau. You can also explore the Cosul Valley around Großpostwitz by bike. The routes therefore differ in their stated focus: one runs through the municipality, while the other follows an old railway line and continues via Cunewalde to Löbau.

The designated fishing spots are Wehr Schnabelmühle, Brücke Großpostwitz, Wehr Althainitz and Kabelbrücke Ontex. Before fishing, check whether access is possible and which rules apply.

Excursions and getting here

Bautzen, with its historic old town, is about a 10-minute drive away. Kleinwelka is home to a dinosaur park, a miniature park and a large maze; the drive there takes about 20 minutes. These approximate driving times give you an idea of how to plan destinations in the surrounding area alongside local trails.

By car, you can reach Großpostwitz from the A4 between Dresden and Görlitz via the Bautzen/West exit and the B96 through Bautzen. Check current road conditions before setting out. This lets you plan your journey separately from your choice between a visit to Bautzen, an excursion to Kleinwelka and the local routes.
