Oßling’s Protestant parish church, Catholic chapel and Nagel Column each represent a different historical theme. In Scheckthal, the scenery shifts to woodland, meadows and moorland. The KRABAT Cycle Route passes through Weißig, a district of Oßling. Other cycle routes form part of the wider network in the Bautzen district.
Church architecture, pilgrimage tradition and surveying
The prominent Protestant parish church was built between 1803 and 1805. It was later extensively restored together with the neighbouring rectory. The building therefore brings together two different periods: its construction at the beginning of the 19th century and a later renovation that also included the rectory.
The Catholic chapel was built between 1955 and 1957 from the ruins of a locomotive shed. The local pilgrimage tradition is also associated with a chapel that, according to tradition, is said to have existed in the area as early as the 13th century. The two dates refer to different contexts: the construction of the Catholic chapel and the older chapel associated with the pilgrimage tradition, as recounted in local tradition.
The Nagel Column stands in Oßling’s churchyard. It was erected on Oßling Hill in 1864 as a first-order triangulation station and is connected to the Central European geodetic network. This adds the history of surveying to the themes of church architecture and pilgrimage tradition. Visitors interested in historic places will find several perspectives here: architectural history, religious tradition and a monument linked to geodetic surveying.
Scenery and activities in Scheckthal
Scheckthal lies on the edge of the Dubringer Moor nature reserve, amid woodland, meadows and moorland. The village is considered a starting point for walks, cycle tours, carriage rides and horse riding. The options range from travelling on foot or by bike to carriage rides and horseback excursions. When planning, you can first decide which kind of activity interests you; check specific routes and local access conditions before setting out.
Cycle routes in the Bautzen district
The local cycling connection for Oßling is the KRABAT Cycle Route, which passes through Weißig. The Bautzen district also offers regional and long-distance routes with different alignments. This distinction separates the route through Weißig from the larger regional routes.
The Bautzen North Tour is a 43.1-kilometre circular route from Bautzen via Quatitz, Großdubrau, Milkel, Klix and Malschwitz, returning to Bautzen. It passes through the heath and pond landscape and along the nature trail in Crosta. Its route and scenery give this tour a different character from the KRABAT Cycle Route through Weißig.
In the Bautzen district, the regional Berg- und Talroute (Mountain and Valley Route) circular tour runs through the West Lusatian Hills. The Krabatradweg is also a regional circular route in the Bautzen district and follows in the footsteps of the Sorbian legendary hero Krabat. Both are regional circular tours, but they differ in their landscape setting and Krabat theme, respectively.
A section of the Mittellandroute runs through the Upper Lusatian Highlands in the Bautzen district; as a long-distance cycle route, it runs from Zittau to Aachen and differs in route type from the regional Berg- und Talroute and Krabatradweg circular tours. The Spreeradweg runs from its source in Upper Lusatia to Berlin; the section from Taubenheim to Zerre lies in the Bautzen district.
