The castle’s history, churches, the Easter fountain tradition and mills give Hirschstein a range of cultural highlights. For outdoor activities, there is a hiking route of about an hour, as well as cycling routes with different focuses. When planning your visit, it is worth checking the visiting conditions too: guided tours of Hirschstein Castle are available on request, and the museum farm opens by appointment only.

Hirschstein Castle and the Hike in Neuhirschstein

Hirschstein Castle is located in the district of Neuhirschstein, right on the Elbe Cycle Route. From the castle, you can see the Elbe, Hirschstein Park and the Hafenlache; the vineyards along the Saxon Wine Route near Diesbar-Seußlitz are also in view. The castle complex comprises the castle building, an outbuilding, a former guard annex and an orangery. Tours are available on request; please arrange your visit in advance. The castle’s history also includes its use in 1944 as a state prison for Belgian King Leopold and his family.

A local hiking route starts at Kastanienallee in Neuhirschstein. Allow about an hour for the roughly 3.5-kilometre route. The trail leads through the park and past an old beech tree, a circular rampart, the Crusius family grave and the Elbe, as well as Neuhirschstein Castle. It runs along forest paths and uneven terrain, so bear this in mind when planning your time. Parking is available at the entrance to Neuhirschstein. Bus route 406 connects Riesa, Hirschstein and MeiĂźen.

Easter Fountains, Churches and the Museum Farm

The Easter fountain tradition in Hirschstein dates back to 2004. It features traditional wrapping techniques and coloured eggs, and is maintained in almost every district. The districts taking part may vary from year to year. As a seasonal tradition, the Easter fountain adds a time-of-year highlight to the churches and historic sites that can be visited year-round.

The church in Boritz contains a late Gothic altar with painted carvings dating from 1520. The Loose museum farm in Boritz presents the way of life of a farming family at the end of the 19th century. Agricultural equipment is also part of the exhibition and is in working order. The farm opens by appointment only, so arrange your visit in advance and check what is currently on display.

The church in Heyda is a protected monument and is considered the oldest building in the village. Its features include its interior furnishings and murals. This gives it a different focus from the altar in Boritz: here, the emphasis is on the furnishings and wall paintings inside the church, while in Boritz, it is on the late Gothic carvings.

Mills and Cycling Routes

The Hirschstein Mill Cycle Route traces the history of former mill sites: information boards along the route explain their history. The route is suitable for touring bikes, e-bikes and gravel bikes. Suitability may vary depending on maintenance and weather conditions, so take both into account when planning.

The Holländer windmill in Pahrenz was built of stone in 1889 and is a functioning technical monument. It can be visited at any time, but check the current visiting arrangements before setting out. Together with the information boards along the Mill Cycle Route, the windmill offers its own perspective on Hirschstein’s technical and milling history, without implying that they form a single route or follow a particular visiting schedule.

When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up the different themes according to your interests: the castle and churches offer historical highlights, the hiking route gives you a specific distance and duration, and the cycling routes focus on the Elbe and the history of milling. Take the conditions for guided tours and visits to the museum farm into account, and check the windmill’s visiting arrangements in advance.
