A Baroque church, a historic palace garden and a factory building in the style of a mosque give Friedrichstadt its distinctive character. There are also walking tours focusing on the district or the route to the Ostragehege. You can tailor your explorations to architectural history, historic sites or a walk.

Baroque Architecture and Garden Design

St Matthew’s Church was built in the 18th century as a Baroque church in Dresden’s Friedrichstadt district. It was rebuilt after suffering severe war damage. The stone sarcophagus of master builder Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann lies in its crypt. The church’s origins, reconstruction and crypt make it a concrete starting point for exploring the district’s architectural history.

The Marcolini Palace also brings together different aspects of the past. Its ballroom is the only surviving Baroque hall from Dresden’s Brühl era. After the grounds passed to Count Heinrich von Brühl in 1736, the palace garden developed into one of Saxony’s most magnificent private parks. The historic rooms and the old park make the site a cultural attraction in Friedrichstadt. The hall and garden tell different stories about the palace: the surviving Baroque interior on the one hand, and the history of the private park on the other.

The Yenidze tells a different story of architecture. Completed and opened in 1909 as a tobacco factory in the style of a mosque, it offers views of Dresden and its sights from its rooftop terrace in summer. The season is a useful point of reference when you are considering adding this view to your plans.

Neptune’s Fountain is located in the park of Dresden Municipal Hospital. This 48-metre-wide Baroque fountain features a three-tier cascade. Its scale and stepped design provide a different architectural accent from the church, palace and Yenidze. The selection therefore ranges from a religious building and a garden to fountain art and a former factory.

Walking Tours and Practical Information

DVB Walking Tour 4 is a walk from Friedrichstadt to the Ostragehege. It starts at WeiĂźeritzstraĂźe stop, served by tram 10 and bus 68. At the end, you can return from MESSE DRESDEN stop on tram 10. If you plan your return journey for a specific time, check the timetable for your travel date.

For exploring the district, there is the walking tour “A Quarter of Friedrichstadt.” You can follow it using a small town map; it shares interesting facts about the district and leaves room for your own discoveries. Guided tours of the district follow historic streets and venerable buildings, offering new perspectives and interesting details. If you plan to join a tour, check the available dates in advance.

Another focus for history is the Old Catholic Cemetery on FriedrichstraĂźe. Established in 1720/24, it contains artistically and historically valuable tombstones from the 18th and 19th centuries. The tombstones spanning two centuries provide a distinctive feature alongside the architectural history of the church and palace.

The walking tours have different focuses: DVB Walking Tour 4 leads from Friedrichstadt to the Ostragehege, while “A Quarter of Friedrichstadt” combines interesting facts about the district with your own discoveries. This lets you choose between a route with a named destination and a tour focused on the district.
