The Dresden Zwinger is a particularly striking example of the connection between architecture and art: Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann designed the building, which was created between 1710 and 1728 as a total work of art combining architecture, sculpture and painting. The Zwinger houses the Old Masters Picture Gallery. Dresden’s Frauenkirche offers a different focal point: its distinctive dome shapes the city skyline; the building is considered an outstanding example of Baroque architecture and a symbol of peace and reconciliation. Dresden’s Residenzschloss, meanwhile, is a Renaissance building in the Old Town and houses the museum complex of the Dresden State Art Collections.

Guided climbs to the dome of the Frauenkirche are available for groups. Check the official visitor calendar before your trip.

Art, Collections and Performance Venues

The Historic Green Vault in Dresden displays around 3,000 precious objects without display cases. Its exhibition in the treasury of Augustus the Strong spans eight rooms, including the Amber Cabinet and the Ivory Room. Visits are limited for conservation reasons; advance booking of timed tickets is recommended. Check ticket requirements before your trip.

The collections and performance venues also each have their own focus. The Albertinum brings together the Galerie Neue Meister and the Sculpture Collection from 1800 onward, both part of the Dresden State Art Collections. The Semper Opera House in Dresden presents opera, ballet and concerts; it opened in its present form in 1878. The city’s cultural offering thus ranges from art collections to live music on stage.

The Dresden Transport Museum devotes its exhibitions to trains, cars, aircraft, ships and urban transport. Visitors can try things out and learn at numerous interactive stations. Festung Xperience in the casemates of the old fortress offers a different way to explore history: 360-degree projections and 3D sound take visitors through 450 years of Dresden’s eventful history. Here, the focus is not on collection objects, but on a multimedia approach to the city’s history.

Winter Market and the Elbe

The Striezelmarkt, held every winter, is a seasonal tradition. Founded in 1434, it is considered Germany’s oldest Christmas market. Visitors can enjoy Dresden Christstollen and watch the famous Christmas pastry being made in the demonstration bakery. A visit to the market and a baking demonstration thus connect the Striezelmarkt’s history with an insight into the making of a Dresden specialty.

Dresden reveals itself on different scales along the river: the Elbe Cycle Route is the main urban cycle route and follows the riverbank through the city, away from road traffic. Brühl’s Terrace extends along the Elbe for about 500 metres, between the Augustus Bridge and the Carola Bridge. These offer two different points of reference for exploring Dresden: a cycle route running through the city and a clearly defined stretch of riverside.

Pillnitz Palace and Park

Pillnitz Palace and Park invite you to stroll and linger at any time of year. The palace combines Baroque and Far Eastern architecture and is set among the vineyards of the Elbe Valley. Numerous exotic plants from almost every continent grow in the palm house in the garden of Pillnitz Palace. You can also plan your journey according to your preferred mode of transport: the palace grounds are easily accessible by public transport, bicycle, steamboat or car.

Whether you want to focus on Dresden’s architecture, art collections, performance venues, winter traditions or the Elbe Cycle Route, these different themes offer cultural and scenic starting points for planning your trip.
