Möckern Castle Park and St. Laurentius Church offer two different ways to explore the town’s history. The park was created in the late 18th century as an English landscape garden and is designated as a landscape monument. St. Laurentius was probably originally a Romanesque basilica and was altered several times during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Together, these two sites reveal different historical layers of Möckern: the design of a park and the development of a church building. In the Jerichower Land district, Jerichow Monastery is considered a landmark.

Building History and Places of Remembrance

The founding of the town church is traditionally attributed to Emperor Otto I and associated with his victory over the Hungarians on August 10, 955. The Heimatstube 1813 in Möckern Castle accepts bookings for guided tours; opening hours are available on request.

In the area around Möckern, the Magdeburgerforth Railway Museum offers visits to its historic railway building complex on opening days. The exhibition covers the history of the KJI, along with displays of model railways, field railways, and garden railways. The railway theme thus ranges from a historic complex to several forms of railway presentation.

Nature Trail, Tours, and Erratic Boulders

The Wörmlitzer Wald nature education and experience trail is associated with Möckern. It uses hands-on nature experiences to promote understanding of nature among people of all ages. Five named cycling or hiking tours are also associated with Möckern: the Elbauentour, Herrentagstour, Forsttour, Badetour, and Powertour. The nature trail focuses on learning, while the tours form a separate set of cycling or hiking routes. Before setting out, it is worth checking the latest trail conditions, as they may change.

The Heimchensteine consist of two large erratic boulders that were transported here from Norway or Sweden during the Ice Age, about 20,000 years ago. A possible prehistoric burial or cult site is suspected in the chamber between the stones. Their geological origins are thus linked to an archaeological interpretation that remains explicitly tentative.

Möckern Outdoor Swimming Pool

Möckern Outdoor Swimming Pool has a combined swimming and non-swimmer pool, as well as a paddling pool. It also has a large sunbathing lawn, a diving area, a playground, and a volleyball court. The water, activity areas, and space to relax each offer a different focus. The outdoor pool thus complements Möckern’s cultural and nature attractions with a swimming facility of its own.

Cycling Routes in the Jerichower Land District

In the Jerichower Land district, you can explore the area from north to south along the Elbe Cycle Route. The Elbe-Havel Cycle Route runs along the canal through the nature-rich Jerichower Land and connects the Elbe Cycle Route with the Havel Cycle Route. The region therefore offers two distinct points of reference: exploring the district from north to south and a connection between the Elbe and Havel cycle routes.
