In Jerichower Land, two cycling routes meet technical monuments and significant architectural history. The Elbe Cycle Route lets you explore the district from north to south. The Elbe-Havel Cycle Route runs along the canal through the nature-rich Jerichower Land and connects the Elbe Cycle Route with the Havel Cycle Route. This offers both a north–south perspective and two interconnected cycling routes to explore.
Cycling routes on a regional scale
In the larger destination of Saxony-Anhalt, the Elbe Cycle Route runs for just under 350 kilometres from Havelberg in the north to Lutherstadt Wittenberg in the south. The stretch through Jerichower Land is part of this wider route; the Elbe-Havel Cycle Route complements it by connecting to the Havel Cycle Route. This distinction is useful when planning: one route takes you through the district from north to south, while the other connects two cycling routes along the canal.
Brick architecture, monastic history and town fortifications
Jerichow Monastery is the oldest brick building in northern Germany and is considered a landmark of Jerichower Land. The monastery garden was designed based on historical models, while the monastery museum presents the monastery’s history. The garden café serves regional products and homemade cake; check the current opening hours before your visit.
In Burg, surviving buildings tell the story of different layers of the town’s history. The Witch’s Tower dates from the 11th-century fortifications. The Berlin Gate Tower is part of the second town wall, built around 1400, and is one of the last remaining of the roughly 30 defensive and watchtowers that once stood here. Those interested in the history of technology can visit the Historic Tannery, a fully preserved technical monument that offers insights into leather production.
Leitzkau Castle adds another historical highlight: it is an important example of Weser Renaissance architecture on the Romanesque Road and is considered the most significant castle built in this style in the Middle Elbe region.
Plan visits to waterway landmarks and museums
The waterway junction extends through Jerichower Land. It consists of the longest trough bridge and several locks, offering a distinctive perspective on the history and design of the waterways. In Genthin, a guided visit to the Detergent Museum is only possible by registering through the Genthin Tourist Information Office. As registration requirements may change, check them before planning your visit.
Wildlife park and bathing lake in Zabakuck
Zabakuck Wildlife Park is home to native species as well as exotic birds and mammals. This gives your outing a different focus from the towns’ architectural and technological history. Zabakuck also has a bathing lake with a small sandy beach, offering a refreshing break during the hot summer months. Check the bathing conditions before your trip.
