Genthin Water Tower is a technical monument; its viewing platform offers panoramic views over the town and surrounding area. Genthin thus combines the history of technology with a specific vantage point. Other attractions include churches, museums, circular hiking trails and a sports marina. If you are looking for a hotel in Genthin, you can plan your trip according to whether your main interests are local history, hiking or the sports marina. Access to the tower may change; check whether it is open before your visit.

Museums and History in Genthin

The Jerichower Land District Museum is housed in an Art Nouveau villa near Genthin railway station; its visitor address is MĂĽtzelstraĂźe 22. The collections showcase regional history, with a focus on prehistory, crafts, shipping and clothing. The museum garden features a so-called runestone, an eight-metre-long dugout canoe and old Prussian milestones. This offers a view ranging from regional topics to individual objects in the garden.

The churches also reflect different historical influences. The plans for St. Trinity Church are attributed to Magdeburg architect Georg PreuĂźer; it is believed to have been built between 1707 and 1722. It is a large, three-aisled hall church with remarkable interior furnishings. The church in Altenplathow is a stop on the Romanesque Road. A figurative gravestone of Hermann von Plote was discovered in 1904 during the demolition of the former church in Altenplathow. It is described as the oldest surviving example in the Elbe-Havel region.

The Detergent Museum documents the history of detergent production in Genthin from 1921 to 2009, including the development from Persil to Spee. The museum is not open continuously; guided visits must be booked through the Genthin Tourist Information Office.

Circular Hiking Trails and Waterways

Six circular hiking trails start from the forecourt of Genthin railway station. Circular Hiking Trail 1 is about six kilometres long: it passes the water tower and then follows the Elbe-Havel Canal. The route description therefore gives both an approximate distance and two specific landmarks. Trail markings and conditions may change; check the latest route information before setting out.

Genthin Sports Marina offers an information point, showers, toilets and laundry facilities. As facilities may change, it is advisable to check their current status before your visit. For boaters arriving from Brandenburg, Genthin is the first sports marina in Saxony-Anhalt. There are also lock connections to Zerben, Parey and Wusterwitz. Conditions on the waterways may change, so check the latest information before planning a boat trip.

Cycling Routes in the Region

The Genthin region has around 184 kilometres of paved cycle paths. In Jerichower Land, the Elbe Cycle Route runs through the district from north to south. The Elbe-Havel Cycle Route follows the canal through the scenic Jerichower Land and connects the Elbe Cycle Route with the Havel Cycle Route. These regional routes complement the local circular hiking trails with options for cyclists, while keeping the two activities distinct.
