Gommern lies between the Elbe floodplains and the foothills of the Fläming. Pine and mixed forests, a landscape dotted with lakes, and cycling paths shape the area. Options range from a signposted cycling route around Gommern to floodplain meadows, bodies of water and historic cultural sites. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on cycling, nature or architectural history.

Cycling routes with different time requirements

A total of 218 kilometres of cycling paths to local attractions are signposted around Gommern. Bridge, church and castle tours can be taken independently or with a guide. These tours are listed as covering around 25 to 35 kilometres and taking five hours. This gives you a specific indication of the time required, although not all routes need to follow the same format. If you prefer a guided tour, check its availability before your trip.

Gommern is close to the Elbe Cycle Route and also lies on the Romanesque Road. In Dornburg, the R2 cycling route runs directly through the floodplain meadows. Schloss Dornburg offers its own historical connection: it was built between 1751 and 1758 as a residence for Princess Johanna Elisabeth following her husband's death. The cycling routes and architectural history offer different emphases, so you can consider them separately when choosing activities rather than planning them as one fixed circular route.

Lakes, paths and urban green spaces

Fuchsberg is a large protected migrating dune. Right next to it is the Kulk, a flooded former quarry with a sandy beach. The Kulk also has an observation tower, paved paths, a rock garden, a playground and a pedestrian bridge. The combination of dunes and landscaped paths makes this a distinct destination for nature and recreation.

A recreation area around nearly 30 gravel-pit lakes includes outdoor swimming pools, campsites, bungalow settlements, restaurants and amenities. Check the individual services before your trip. Five more gravel-pit lakes, surrounded by pine and birch forests, invite visitors to swim and go for walks; check bathing conditions before your visit. If you prefer paths through open countryside and woodland, the Dannigkow recreation area offers opportunities for hiking and cycling in the Elbe meadows and extensive forests.

Natural areas within the town also offer a different perspective on the landscape. The wetland habitats in the urban area provide natural environments for water-loving plants and small animals. The rectory garden brings together a 350-square-metre water feature, a shallow-water shore and an adjoining perennial garden. This places open water and landscaped garden areas alongside the larger lakes and forest areas.

Castles and churches as cultural destinations

Gommern's moated castle combines a historic castle complex with a restaurant, an on-site brewery, a hotel and a redesigned courtyard. Medieval-style banquets and castle festivals add to what is on offer, and a wedding room is also available. The castle thus brings architectural history and events together in one place, while the churches in the surrounding districts stand out for their own historic details.

In Vehlitz, which is part of the municipality of Gommern, St. Stephen's Church is late Romanesque and dates from around 1150. Inside is a late Gothic, three-winged carved altarpiece. In Leitzkau, the site of the castle church dates back to a Premonstratensian monastery founded in 1138/39. These connections, separated by a considerable span of time, give visitors interested in culture several distinct points of interest, although the buildings do not belong to the same period.

For information while you're there, Gommern Information provides leisure tips, brochures and leaflets about Gommern and the surrounding municipalities. Direct connections to federal highways 184, 246 and 246a can also be useful when planning your journey; the A2 and A14 motorways are nearby. If you're looking for a hotel in Gommern, the different highlights can help you shape your stay around cycling, bodies of water or culture.
