The Goseck circular enclosure brings a vast span of time to life: the monument, around 75 metres across, is considered the earliest archaeological evidence of systematic observation of the sky. It was fully excavated and precisely reconstructed at its original location. Together with the Nebra Sky Disc, it draws attention to archaeological and astronomical-history questions that shape Burgenlandkreis.

Sky Paths and Archaeological Discoveries

The Sky Paths lead through Burgenlandkreis, taking visitors to archaeological and astronomical-history highlights connected with the Nebra Sky Disc and the Goseck solar observatory. At Arche Nebra, a modern visitor centre at the site where the Sky Disc was found, the programme includes guided tours, hands-on activities and special exhibitions. The digital planetarium also explores Bronze Age knowledge: the show lasts 22 minutes.

Goseck Castle offers a different way to explore the subject. Its information centre illustrates the excavations at Goseck and the phenomenon of circular enclosures. There is free parking at the entrance to Goseck, and an asphalt path 350 metres long leads to the solar observatory. The Mittelberg has its own access rules: it can be reached free of charge on foot, by bicycle, e-scooter or authorised scheduled bus. Access by private motor vehicle is not permitted. Check the visitor rules before planning your visit.

Cathedral, Castle and Monastery

The Naumburg Cathedral showcases architecture, stained-glass windows and sculptures. It is considered one of the most important cultural monuments of the European High Middle Ages; its architecture, stained-glass windows and sculptures are regarded as unique worldwide. The cathedral has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1 July 2018.

Another medieval trace leads to Freyburg: Neuenburg Castle was founded around 1090 by the Thuringian Count Ludwig the Springer and is considered a major stop on the Romanesque Road. The history of the site thus has a place of its own alongside the region’s archaeological themes.

At Memleben Monastery, getting your bearings goes hand in hand with a specific cycling connection. The monastery can be reached via the Unstrut Cycle Route; a small bridge across the Unstrut, at the level of the complex, makes it possible to take a detour. A new educational centre was inaugurated there on 28 May 2026. It is intended to serve as an out-of-school learning venue for groups, a venue for expert talks and a seminar venue available to book. Since that date, visitors with or without physical disabilities have been able to visit the outdoor area, the exhibition areas on the ground floor of the cloister buildings, the refectory and the exhibition on the upper floor of the east wing.

Vineyards and Themed Routes

The landscape also makes its own distinctive impression: terraced vineyards define Burgenlandkreis and are among its characteristic landscape features. The Wine Route is considered one of the region’s main tourist routes. Together with the Sky Paths and the Romanesque Road, it shows how a visit can be shaped around different themes: wine landscapes, archaeology or medieval architecture. These routes offer different ways to explore the region; they do not form a single circular route.

When choosing, you can start by considering which theme you would like to explore in more depth. The Sky Paths focus on archaeological and astronomical history; the Romanesque Road is a themed route leading to major sites such as Neuenburg Castle. Those travelling by bicycle will find a clearly described connection to the Unstrut Cycle Route at Memleben Monastery. At the Mittelberg, choosing an authorised way to access the site is an important part of planning.
