Mertendorf can be explored through a variety of themes: circular trails through meadows and fields, a mill route along the Wethau, and churches with distinctive architectural features and a long history. When planning, you can consider these highlights separately or prioritize them according to your interests. The trails differ in more than just their names: the Vehrigsweg is described as a circular trail, while the MĂĽhlenwanderweg passes several places and mills and is also suitable for cycling.

Circular Trails, Mills and Landscape

The Vehrigsweg is a circular trail through meadows and fields around Mertendorf, offering views of the surrounding landscape. A hikers’ parking area for the trail is located in Mertendorf on Naumburger Straße, next to the sports ground. Check the parking information before setting out. The Mertendorfer Halbberge natural monument is part of the “Halbberge bei Mertendorf” FFH area and adds another nature-related feature to the routes.

The MĂĽhlenwanderweg follows the Wethau and passes through Mertendorf and Wetterscheidt. Its stops there include the UntermĂĽhle, the WalkmĂĽhle and the HerrenmĂĽhle; a total of nine windmills and watermills are among the features of the route in the Wethautal valley. The UntermĂĽhle in Wetterscheidt is considered a local attraction. Those interested in the history of mills will find a different focus here than on the Vehrigsweg, whose description emphasizes meadows, fields and views of the landscape.

The Mühlenwanderweg is also suitable for cycling and connects to the Saale Cycle Route for trips towards Weißenfels and Bad Kösen. Before setting out by bike, check current surface and safety conditions. For longer walks, sections of the Rad-Acht also offer options in the Mertendorf area. Alongside the circular trail, there is therefore a mill route and other walking sections to choose from, but this does not mean they form a single combined tour or have a specified walking time.

Church Architecture and Local History

St. Martin’s Church in Mertendorf was consecrated in its present form in 1817. One of its architectural features is a detached bell house dating from 1868, rather than a tower attached to the church building. Inside, there is a two-tier, horseshoe-shaped gallery with an organ, as well as an altar with a pulpit at the eastern end. The arrangement of the gallery, organ and altar offers several specific points of interest if you are interested in church architecture.

The church in Großgestewitz also has a long history: the present Gothic church has a predecessor building documented as early as 1424. A St. Nicholas chapel, independently documented by 1510 at the latest, now forms the church’s northern extension. Along with the architectural features of St. Martin’s, this history shows that the churches in Mertendorf and Großgestewitz can be explored in different ways: one has a bell house, gallery and pulpit altar; the other, a sequence of predecessor building and chapel over time.

Ice Cream Available Seasonally

In the district of Cauerwitz, Eisfreunde offer handmade ice cream made with regional ingredients, from classic to unusual flavors. Their mobile sales vehicles operate seasonally at markets and make regular stops at the weir in Bad Kösen. As some sales are seasonal and the vehicles are mobile, check in advance where and when ice cream is expected to be sold. The ice cream adds a culinary highlight to the options for a visit, but you should not assume there is a fixed sales location.
